Big Brother is a TV reality show that was first shown in 1999 in the Netherlands. CBS bought the rights to the show in early 2000 and has held them ever since. Since then, the show has turned in to an international franchise with more than 54 different versions. Based on a book called 1984 by George Orwell, the premise of the show is to isolate a group of  people known as “HouseGuests” from the outside world and use cameras to watch and record everything that happens in the house. The exception to this rule is a family emergency or passing of a family member.

Since it first aired on CBS, the show has been hosted by Julie Chen. The guests in Big Brother (referred to as BB) compete for monetary rewards of $500,000. Despite the different versions of BB, many prefer to watch the American version. Though the CBS website states it is only available in “Select Markets”, if you had a subscription to CBS All Access, you could watch the Big Brother live feeds from outside of the US with a VPN.

Though the premise of BB has stayed the same over the years, the show itself has changed. In an attempt to keep the show fresh, the crew for Big Brother is always coming up with new competitions and twists for the houseguests. The show usually has interesting people and this year is no exception.

Some of the old houseguests from season’s past are back for Big Brother season 18.  James is one of our favorites once again.  James lives in Texas currently, but is from South Carolina originally. What makes this gentleman stand out so much is hearing a Southern drawl and seeing an Asian. Additionally, James wastes no time in referring to himself as a “Hillbilly Asian”.  He stated he was knocked for a loop with Audrey’s announcement last year, but followed up by saying that he knew what it was like to be judged because of his thick country accent.

BB18 promises new twists and turns every week. The first of these twists was that the contestants would start out competing in groups.  BB16 brought us Battle of the Block. The battle creates two heads of household. Each HoH would nominate two other houseguests for eviction, totaling four nominees. The two pairs of nominees would then compete in the Battle of the Block competition; the winning pair would be removed from the block, with the HoH who nominated them dethroned. The dethroned HoH would later be eligible to be nominated after the Power of Veto has been used, however the Battle of the Block winners are safe for the rest of the week. The rest of the show would continue normally, with the remaining HoH retaining immunity for the week, and the two nominees being eligible for safety through the Power of Veto.

There are surely more twists to come as the first houseguest was sent packing before the two day premiere was completed.  Last year the second twist was called BB Takeover in which a surprise guest showed up every week to reveal a new twist, and the third twist was called the Twin Twist. That scenario occurred because one of the houseguests had an identical twin, and the production crew swapped them out to fool the other members. There are sure to be some great twists waiting in the BB house again this year.

Big Brother has had premium live streaming feeds in the past where you could watch the feeds 24/7 and have access to content that was more mature in nature then what is normally shown on TV. This year however, CBS bundled the BB streams in to their stand alone streaming service, CBS All Access. In addition to the streams, they also offer 6500 episodes of other hit CBS shows for $5.99 a month.

If you live outside of the US and wish to view the channel, you would be geo-blocked without a VPN. Geo-blocking is a technology used to block access outside of their target audience. In other words, if you were in Canada or any other country besides the US territories, you would be blocked due to licensing restrictions. A VPN service will allow you to view this content and add a layer of encryption to your data. Providing you have a valid subscription to CBS All Access, you would be able to watch as if you were in the US.

How to Use a VPN to Watch BB live feeds

We will use IPVanish for the example of how to use a VPN service to watch the live feeds.  First you’ll want to download the VPN client.  IPVanish offers free client software for Windows, Mac and Linux. In addition to free apps for iOS and Android.

Now that you’ve had a chance to download and install the software it’s time to connect.  Launch the IPVanish client and select a server location.  We’ll walk you through step by step using their Windows client.

Select a server location. Since CBS All access is only available in US territories, you will want to pick one in the US. IPVanish has a large network of servers located in other countries as well, though.

We recommend you select OpenVPN (TCP) or (UDP).  For streaming videos from sites like YouTube we use OpenVPN (UDP).  They also support PPTP and L2TP.  We still recommend OpenVPN for the best privacy protection.

Click connect.  After a few seconds you’ll see the button at the top change to green and show “Disconnect”.  You’ll also notice the server location and IP address show up at the top of the client.

We could now be located in a city in the US as far as anyone can tell online. As such, we can reach any site as if we were sitting there. The same would be true if we connected to a server in the UK or anywhere else in the world.

It is just that easy to do. Now that you have an IP address from an IPVanish server in the US, you can browse the Internet or watch Big Brother as if you were actually there. The same is true from any country, but you will want to connect to a server in the United States or US territories to watch the live feeds.

As you can probably tell by now, a good VPN opens access to content around the world. For use outside the United States, the service can help you access popular services like Netflix, Hulu and Pandora. You still need an account for services like Netflix but the VPN will help you watch US television shows and movies on Netflix as if you were sitting there or in any other region you would like to access.

Stay current on the latest BB18 twists and turns and watch all the drama unfold live before your eyes.  Share this post with your friends so they can enjoy Big Brother from anywhere in the world with a VPN.  Follow us @VPNFan for the latest deals and guides.
