Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 50th day since the demonetisation was started, launched the digital payments app ‘BHIM’ (Bharat Interface for Money) is which will facilitate e-transactions using just a thumb impression.

“In just two weeks, payment via use of biometric fingerprint will begin in India. With this BHIM app, you’ll only require your thumb to pay. In the past, illiterate people were called ‘angutha-chaap’ but now your thumb is your bank. It has become your identity now,” PM Modi said in Delhi at the DigiDhan Mela.

BHIM a mobile payment application and a re-branded version of Unified Payment Interface (UPI) and Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD)modes of e-payment.

BHIM App is a tribute to economist Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, PM Modi said.

“Dr Ambedkar’s mantra was to work for the upliftment of the poor. And the biggest power of technology is that it can empower the poor,” he added.

BHIM app is very simple to use and the best thing is it doesn’t require internet connectivity mobile phones.

It is “Christmas gift” to the public, Modi said. Plus he also felicitated the winners of the Lucky Grahak Yojana and DigiDhan Vyapar Yojana.

Under these schemes, people who conduct digital payments of in the range Rs 50 and Rs 3000 will be rewarded in a lucky-draw.

Several prizes of Rs 1,000 in coming 100 days will be given to people through lucky draws. On April 14 the mega draw will be held, the birth anniversary of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar.
