It is the music heard while sword-wielding heroes fight monsters and other enemies.

The University of La Verne Symphony Orchestra is set to perform selections from popular video games such as World of Warcraft, the Legend of Zelda and God of War during its “Music of the Virtual Worlds” on April 10.

Video game concerts are a trend dating back to the 1990s in Japan and continue today with the international concert series “Video Games Live.” Video game composing is a growing industry, attracting musicians previously focused on movie scores.

“It’s a pretty big world,” said Danielle Rosaria, orchestra director and University of La Verne alumna.

Pieces the University’s orchestra plans to perform April 10 are “Hyrule Field” from Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and “Dragonborn” from Skyrim. Additional ensembles will perform pieces such as “Invincible” from World of Warcraft, as well as soundtrack music from “League of Legends.”

Rosaria, a violinist, composer and member of the Los Angeles Composers Collective, said the University’s symphony formed in 2013 as a chamber orchestra comprised mainly of string instruments. The group has since grown to 30 regular members including 10 students and 20 community members, many who are active and retired music faculty. Additional musicians from the community join the core group for concerts.

The orchestra’s next concert, “Music of Myth and Legend,” is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 22 at the University’s Morgan Auditorium. That concert will feature epic compositions including one of Rosario’s pieces called “King Arthur” and Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo.” “May it Be” from the Lord of the Rings, which was originally sung by Irish artist Enya, will be performed by the orchestra and guest soprano, Anne Barrack.

University of La Verne students may join the orchestra by enrolling in the course Music 119, but do not need to be music majors. To learn more about the program, e-mail Rosaria at drdanieller8@gmail.com.
