With award shows, weddings and birthdays popping up on a weekly basis, each year gives the women of Bollywood and Hollywood countless options to flaunt the newest, coolest outfits in their wardrobes. Here’s a look at the best looks in each category.
Indian ethnic
Deepika Padukone’s style journey this year started strong with Anamika Khanna. Following her down the traditional route were Karisma Kapoor (in that ebony Sabyasachi in March), a then-pregnant Mira Kapoor wearing Varun Bahl, Kangana Ranaut in an elegant ivory sari in August, and Anushka Sharma in a Diwali-ready Anita Dongre in October. Other stars who stood out in Indian silhouettes this year: Katrina Kaif, Neha Dhupia and Malaika Arora Khan.
Red carpet-ready
Priyanka Chopra did the country proud in 2016, making headlines each time she walked a red carpet. Two of her strongest looks this year: a shimmering Jenny Packham in March, and the flaming red Jason Wu gown she opted for later in September. Sonam Kapoor walked the red carpet overseas this year as well, first at Cannes, and then again at the London Film Festival. Her pick for both events: Ralph & Russo.
As always, the Met Gala (May 2016) saw some major conversation-starters, from Blake Lively’s Burberry to Nicole Kidman’s cosmic McQueen number and Zoe Saldana’s feathery Dolce & Gabbana. Closer to home, Kate Middleton was the talk of the town during her Mumbai visit in an elegant Temperley London gown, Vaani Kapoor emerged as a strong sartorial contender this month in Nachiket Barve, and Kareena Kapoor Khan reinvented maternity dressing in one stunning gown after another.
Casual staples
Midi skirts were a favourite with the stars this year. After Alia Bhatt’s Shivan & Narresh dress back in April, we spotted everyone from Naomie Harris to Jessica Alba and Pernia Qureshi sporting dresses and skirts of similar lengths. More into trousers? Look to Anushka Sharma’s all pink H&M ensemble from last week, or Aditi Rao Hydari’s black-and-gold combo for Manish Malhotra’s birthday celebrations. These looks are the perfect combo of comfort and style.
