Amitabh Bachchan, celebrated actor and one of the most recognised voices in the country, often lends his deep baritone to raise awareness for social betterment. The industry stalwart, also a doting grandfather, has penned a letter to his granddaughters—and it’s relevant for girls everywhere.
Bachchan starts his letter by reminding the girls—Navya Naveli, daughter of Shweta and Nikhil Nanda, and Aaradhya, daughter of Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan, of the legacies of their great grandfathers—HP Nanda and Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan, respectively. “Both your pardadaji’s gave your present surnames celebrated fame, dignity and recognition[sic]! Both of you may be a Nanda or a Bachchan, but you are also girls…women! And because you are women people will force their thinking, their boundaries on you,” he says.
The letter goes on to tell the girls to walk strong despite the character judgments that undoubtedly will come their way, and their illustrious last names will do nothing to protect them from it. “This may be a difficult, difficult world to be a woman. But I believe that it is women like you that will change that. It may not be easy, setting your own boundaries, making your own choices, rising above people’s judgement. But YOU !…you can set an example for women everywhere,” Bachchan says.
