During their tour, GOLF will meet with language students of the Goethe-Institut, from PASCH partner schools and local universities for workshops and talks. Next to that, they will play a total of seven concerts to which everybody is welcome to join and enjoy new, German electropop music.

Jonathan Heitkämper (drums), Nils Asthoff (base), André Hörmeyer (vocals, guitar) and Wolfgang Petrasch (vocals, guitar, keyboard) have known each other since kindergarden. Nevertheless, GOLF was only founded last year. A lot has happened since: Showcase gigs for big labels, recordings with Tom Hessler, a member of the popular band “Fotos” and successful concerts, for example at the well-known c/o pop festival in Cologne and the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg.

GOLF is one of the most interesting bands in the German music scene right now. Their songs combine danceable electronic beats with funky pop, resulting in catchy tunes and lyrics that will stick around in your head all day. GOLF uses the noises of everyday items, such as key chains, coins, vacuum cleaners and frying pans, to create their very own, innovative sound. Vietnamese Imperial Embroidery Workshop

Thu 22 Oct 2015, 6 – 10 pm

Blossom Art House

94B Tran Hung Dao, Hanoi

Come to join a very special Imperial Embroidery workshop with artist Tram Ngoc Pham and special guest master artisan Vu Gioi.

Embroidery has a long tradition of more than 700 years in Vietnam, and the needle art form archives its best in the royal embroidery, especially the imperial robes.

Imperial robes – just like many other historical artefacts – reflect cultural values, beliefs and many beautiful symbols. All of them come to life via magnificent hand-stitching. Royal embroidery is always considered the highest rank of this needle art form, which requires not only the best quality materials but also the hands of many master artisans whose techniques and creativity bring both precision and soul to every pattern.

For this workshop, we have Vu Gioi, the one and only master artisan who has dedicated more than 30 years of his life to revive royal traditions in embroidery.

To Gioi, every robe has its own story, and when you do embroidery, it is not only stitching but to reverently bring a beautiful story into everlasting life.

To illustrate the Vietnamese royal patterns, he will teach us one of the patterns from Her Majesty The Queen’s robe: its design, color harmony, and the particular combination of stitches.

WORKSHOP TIMELINE

– 30 minutes – Introduction to Vietnamese Imperial Embroidery

– 10 minutes – Studying a royal pattern

– 10-20 minutes – Participants will be given materials to get prepared and get used to the materials

– 20-30 minutes – Master artisan explain the secret techniques of royal embroidery

– 90 – 100 minutes – Practicing embroidery

NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS

20-25 people (15 years old and above). For people who are interested in working with needle arts, fashion and history. You are welcomed to bring along any of your favorite fabrics (should be in plain color).

”Lyrical & Cooking”: Swedish Jazz Night with Hakan Rydin Trio

Wed 21 Oct 2015, 8.30 – 10.30 pm

Don’s- A Chef’s Bistro Hanoi

16 Quảng An, Tây Hồ, Hà Nội

Come to “Lyrical & Cooking”, a music concert by Swedish Jazz Professor, Pianist Håkan Rydin and his trio band with Mattias Hjorth on the bass and Hung Cuong on the drums.

Håkan Rydin was the first Swedish student to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Jazz Pedagogy and graduated in 1978. He was the original member of the Swedish legendary group Nexus. The group performed for 20 years with more than 1000 concerts in many parts of the world. Nexus was a pioneer in many ways: it was the first Swedish band to perform at all major jazz festivals in Canada, the first group to organize a private tour in Soviet Union in 1990… Håkan played in Nexus until the group was dissolved in 1994. At that time he had already begun his longtime collaboration with American singer Kim Parker (daughter of the legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker) and together they toured the world over. Shortly after Nexus disbanded, he put together his trio with Hans Andersson and Mårgan Höglund. Their first CD “Beautiful Friendship” released on Four Leaf Records 1996 (FLC CD 146), was very well received and released in more than 10 countries.

In 2005 the trio CD “Tender Silhouette”, recorded in Sun Studio in Copenhagen, was released on the Japanese label “Marshmallow Records”. The CD got 4 stars (out of 5) in Swing Journal, Tokyo and received rave reviews in Sweden. The CD “A Splendored Thing” (Sittel SITCD 9313) with a tenet was released in 2007. A trio CD with Yutaka Kaido on the bass, Makoto Rikitake on the drums and guest artist Hiromi Masuda on alto sax was recorded in August 2010 in Yokohama, also on Marshmallow Records and released in 2013.

In great demand as a pianist, Håkan Rydin has performed with Thad Jones, Pepper Adams, Red Mitchell, Etta Cameron, Enrico Rava, Tim Hagans, Georgie Fame, David Liebman and Swedish jazz artists Jan Allan, Arne Domnérus, Helge Albin, Anders Bergcrantz, Christer Boustedt, Bernt Rosengren and Svante Thuresson, among others. He has given concerts in more than 20 countries including Canada, USA, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Russia, France, Spain, Italy, the Estonia, Lithuania, Ireland, the Netherlands, Greece, Brazil, China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam.

Throughout his 40 years of music career, Håkan has performed at many major jazz festivals including Cork International Jazz Festival, Barcelona Jazz Festival, Svedala Jazz Festival, Helsingborgs Jazzfestival, Festival International du Jazz de Montreal, Calgary Jazz Festival, Jazz City Festival in Edmonton, Pacific Jazz & Blues Festival in Vancouver, Saskatchewan Jazz Festival in Saskatoon,Toronto International Jazz festival, Festival Orford in Centre d’Arts, Magog, Molson Harbor, Front Festival in Toronto, EBU International Jazz Festival in Aarhus (Denmark), Montreal (Canada) and Savonlinna (Finland) and North Sea Jazz festival.

Edmonton Journal (Canada) described Håkan Rydin’s style as “lyrical and cooking”.

In April 2013 Håkan Rydin was appointed Professor of Jazz Piano at the Malmö Academy of Music (Lund university – world’s top 100 universities). At the moment, he’s focusing on his Håkan Rydin Scandinavian Trio.

Last but not least, Håkan has played a huge part in developing the jazz scene in Vietnam. He has taught some of the most prominent Vietnamese jazz musicians during their course of study at Malmö Academy of Music. Håkan has been to Vietnam 6 times and given master class to students from the Jazz Department of Vietnam National Academy of Music.

Tommy Emmanuel 2015 Live in Vietnam

Wed 21 Oct 2015, 8 pm

Youth Theater

11 Ngo Thi Nham, Hanoi

For his well-known compositions, Tommy Emmanuel has been nominated for Grammy Awards twice, even though “… I still haven’t had any training, I still don’t read or write music. I can write you a song, I just can’t write it out on paper,” he said in a TEDx session in Melbourne in 2014. With a very natural way of learning and playing the guitar, not following the convention, Tommy has inspired many generations of listeners who admire him.

Born in 1955, Tommy started learning guitar since the age of 4, with a career more than 5-decade long. He has fascinated hundreds of thousands of fans from all over the world. His concerts are well-known for his humor and his lively, passionate performances. Performing live for his fans is a very important thing for Tommy. Now at the age of 60, he still has around 300 performances each year.

Fingerstyle – the new genre of solo guitar music in Vietnam – has been thriving in the recent years. One simple way to describe fingerstyle is “one-man band with only one guitar” – only one performer can replace an entire band (integrating the percussion parts onto the guitar). The most unique and captivating aspect of this genre is how the performer can simultaneously play the melody and the percussion by using skillful techniques of hitting the body of the guitar to breathe life into his songs. This is a modern guitar genre, its sound is the melodies of youth. Fingerstyle brings about a whole new perspective of the acoustic guitar.

For more information about the artist, visit his website.

Battery Dance Company Repertoire – Vietnam Tour 2015

Mon 19 Oct 2015, 8 pm

Hanoi Opera House

1 Tràng Tiền, Hà Nội

Battery Dance Company is celebrating its 40th anniversary season with performances in theaters, festivals and educational settings in over 65 countries around the world. The tour is the Company’s second tour in Vietnam; after the first performance on the stages of the HCMC and Hanoi Opera Houses in 2005. The Company’s repertoire is classified by genre as modern and contemporary dance. The Battery dancers are all trained in classical ballet, modern dance and a variety of other styles; and their aesthetic is eclectic but unified by the pursuit of beauty, intricate design and compelling mood and theatricality. No words are spoken by the dancers – their dance serves as the mode of expression; and therefore, there is no literal narrative underlying each work.

– Artistic Director: Jonathan Hollander

– Dancers:

1. Mira Bai Cook

2. Robin Daberath Cantrell

3. Sean O Scantlebury

4. Clement Mensah

5. Bethany Lynn Mitchell

4. The Devil’s Playground

Choreographer: Sean Scantlebury

Created as part of “Autobiographica”, an evening length work choreographed by all of the members of Battery Dance for the 2012 New York Season, The Devil’s Playground has remained in the repertoire as one of the Company’s most powerful works. The music was commissioned from Polarity/1, a composer who is a neighbor of Battery Dance Company in lower Manhattan. The inspiration from the piece comes from science fiction cartoons and the fact that the two male dancers in the original cast were from Algeria and brought certain qualities and characteristics that influenced Sean’s choice of movement.

It can be said that God bless collectors during their approach to artists and artworks. On the other hand, they are talented businessmen investing in the arts while the domestic art market is still rudimental.

Nguyễn Minh was raised in a family of antique collectors; also his own antique collection is valuable. Later he became friend of Đức Minh’s sons, the art collectors (Bùi Đình Thản), and was considered as the first buyer of some items from Đức Minh’s collection upon its dissolution.

In recent years, Nguyễn Minh changed the mind and started participating in international art auctions of Christie’s, Sotheby’s and others. These works shall probably undergo a chequered fate, due to limitations in storing capacity of Vietnamese collectors.

Therefore, at any time, the introduction of the precious works of art is a good opportunity for the general public and art lovers, in which the role of the arts in the culture and in the society is evaluated.

In any country, any nation that has come cross too long wars and undergone complicated political regimes, there is not much chance for culture even though it is the country’s survival motivation.

That is just the case of Vietnam culture context. Near the end of the 19th century, Vietnam was under French colonialism against a powerless feudalism, and a lot of patriotic movements happened.

The first half of the 20th century witnessed patriotic organised struggles, and finally the Vietnam Communist party played a decisive role in the fight for national independence.

The country split into two parts for more than 20 years, from 1954 to 1975, and then an arduous reunification. Later came the period of the “Subsidy economy”, post-war recovery, Đổi Mới (the Renovation), Socialism – oriented market economy…

Over the whole 20th century, Vietnam culture was like mothers in the war nourishing their children, willing to sacrifice all. Many ancient buildings as pagodas, temples, and community houses were destroyed.

Many antiquities disappeared and were traded abroad. Almost all artists became poor, down and out; lastly their artworks were sent adrift.

Till today, archiving artworks in domestic collections has been considered to be a great human awakening. And people, who are awakened, in one way or another protect these artworks even under nearly impossible conditions.

Every quality collection can be a face of art and culture in its own way. Thereby, it may be said, Nguyễn Minh’s collection is Art of Vietnam – Another look.

This exhibition also received support from Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, Department of Fine Arts and Photography, art critic Phan Cẩm Thượng, ACCAviet the organiser as well as many friends, colleagues and artists. We are deeply thankful.

His collection stores more than 200 art pieces since the periof of École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine, Wartime, Subsidying time and Doi Moi (the Renovation), lasting from 1940 – 1990 of 20th century. There are many famous names of features artists in Vietnamese Modern Arts, such as Lê Phổ, Vũ Cao Đàm, Mai Trung Thứ, Lê Thị Lựu, Bùi Xuân Phái, Nguyễn Tư Nghiêm, Nguyễn Trọng Hợp, Lê Quốc Lộc, Mai Văn Hiến, Trọng Kiệm, Trần Duy, Nguyễn Dung, Đặng Xuân Hòa, Thành Chương… and others.

Choreographer Bui Ngoc Quan’s contemporary dance work “The Roof” is a fantastically special work with strong movements, artistic visuals with live speaking and singing of the dancers.

Bui Ngoc Quan gathered a group of Vietnamese dancers and encouraged them to freely create, develop and use new body languages. As a Vietnamese with many years of experience living and working in the arts in Europe, he has combined his experience, his visions and different cultures to create this wonderful work. Through the stories the dancers tell, any audience can feel the connection between life and this work of contemporary dance.

Set in a maze on a roof, the audience can find in this a world where anyone can escape the everyday busy lives. A day on this roof seems to be a time when anybody can freely express, find our yearnings and passions and imagine new lifestyles. Solo Exhibition “The Dream” by Jorge Rivera

Opening: Fri 16 Oct 2015, 6 pm

Exhibition: 16 Oct – 13 Nov 2015

Art Vietnam Gallery

24 Ly Quoc Su (2nd Floor), Hanoi

Open Monday-Saturday 10am – 6pm

Art Vietnam Gallery is happy to announce our first exhibition of the autumn season of 2015 with the works of the Spanish sculptor Jorge Rivera, entitled “The Dream”, a reference to the Honda Dream motorbike that was the quintessential luxury of the early 1990’s. This exhibition is the merging of three cultures, Spain, Vietnam and Japan

that reflects the cooperation of our 3 neighbors at the 24 Ly Quoc Su art zone with the Vietnamese LACA art café, Japan’s Pizza 4P’s and the Spanish designer Diego of Chula. We are happy to invite you to this celebration of the international side of life and art.

Opening reception is Friday October 16 at 6pm.

Jorge Rivera, Spanish sculptor residing in London and Taiwan, Ph.D graduate of Sculpture from the prestigious Royal College of Art in London, discovered the marvels of local marble while traveling in Central Vietnam two years ago and has spent months creating his latest body of innovative sculptures for his upcoming solo exhibition at Art Vietnam Gallery in Hanoi.

The title recalls the Honda Dream motorbike, the quintessential symbol of luxury and prestige in the early 1990’s, as the trigger for the fantasies and dreams of the Vietnamese people. Fascinated with the relationship the Vietnamese have with their motorbikes since they are young, to how much of their everyday lives spins around these old machines, how they literally sleep, eat and live on them, the artist expands on this intimate accord.

The artist states: “‘The Dream’ is my personal attempt to portray the spirit, the essence and the strength of the Vietnamese character. My intention is to get close to who the Vietnamese are as human beings, their dreams, identity and aspirations, using the intimate relationship they have with their motorbike as the tool to explore and expand on their persona.”

The show consists of a total of nine marble pieces, a short video projection, three large paintings in silk and a selection of sketches, collages and storyboards of the pieces and the film. The sculptures are variations and extrapolations of different parts of motorbikes. The sculptures work as a dismembered part of a larger body. The body of the

Honda Dream, the parts are somehow different stages of dreaming. The parts made in marble aim to emphasize not only the obvious physical dimension with those parts but also the more unconscious, emotional and spiritual content hinted in the material of the white marble, burnt wood or stone. The titles of the pieces and the stands are abstractions of mythological motives constantly active in the Vietnamese heritage, traditional art and craftsmanship.

The film intercuts footage of the making of the marble pieces (a moon-like scape of the workshop covered in white dust) with footage that the artist has gathered from his motorbike journeys throughout the country with some references to the mythological animals and elements staged in popular celebrations such as the lion or the dragon dance.

The large paintings on silk portray the body of the motorcyclist without the actual motorbike. The bodies painted on translucent silk are like ghosts or dreamy images floating and being driven in the space by a non existent vehicle.

Rivera has exhibited widely internationally and has participated in artist in residency programs recently in Taiwan, Tokyo and Berlin. His works are in the public collections of Sotheby’s and the Royal College of Art, London, Takumy Museum, Japan, Stanford University, San Francisco, Fundacion Barrie de La Maza, A Coruna, and Fundacion Luis Seoane, A Coruna and in private collections.
