Nha San Collective

2nd floor, 24 Ly Quoc Su, Hanoi

Nha San Collective proudly presents an “Open studio” session by photographer Binh Dang.

This July, Binh Dang will present his photography project started from 2014 in the form of open studio and exhibition. Binh has worked with a DIY camera mechanism of taking portrait photos of people’s faces deep in the water. He asks people to participate in this project, take them through an “unique photography experience” and the result is a photo series displaying various facial expressions, created by the same process of working and presenting. This series does not simply give a visual impression of the interaction between flesh and water but also makes the audiences recall the dawn of human-beings, back to the time when we were staying in our mothers’ wombs.

The project “Expressions” in its initial period has been chosen as one of the Contemporary Artists finalists within the Contemporary Talents prize of Foundation Francois Schneider and was also featured in a photography magazine – DODHO Magazine.

Bing Dang is one of the young photographers living and working in Hanoi. After graduating from University of Applied Art, Binh has been exploring and practicing documentary photography as a personal method of researching social issues. He has participated in well-known photography workshops like Angkor Workshop, Foundry Workshop, Panoramic Worskhop in the College of Arts in Eunic’s Open Academy Europe. Binh’s artworks have been exhibited in Paris, Phnom Penh, New Delhi, Hanoi,… and have been featured in various international magazines (Le Journal de la Photographie, Le Monde, Exposure Magazine…). Recently, Binh Dang is interested in doing personal photography projects as a way of presenting the abstraction of the thinking process.

For those who want to experience the portraiture photography project, please send an email to binhdang.me@gmail.com including your full name and preferred time slot. The process is open to public at Nha San Collective.

Live music with Australian musician Floyd Thursby

Sat 18 Jul 2015, 8 pm

Hanoi Social Club

6 Hoi Vu Str, Hanoi

From the organizer:

Songpoet Floyd Thursby creates uniquely evocative folk and country songs with striking lyrics and strong melodies. He performs solo: one guitar, one voice.

Based in Melbourne, Australia, Thursby will be performing his original songs at the Hanoi Social Club on Saturday, 18 July 2015, exploring the collective – and personal – unconscious: love and death, brimstone and ecstasy, the sacred and the profane.

Thursby’s critically-acclaimed debut album ‘A Thief’s Journal’ was released in 2007 on Ang Fang Industries through MGM. Thursby’s new album ‘Sinatra’s Bones’ is out now.

PRESS:

‘Finally, a folk/country record where you can tell one song from another… Thursby writes with just enough ornament to trigger your imagination, never straying into pretension… This album is hard to fault.’ – Forte Magazine

‘Floyd Thursby has a fascinating voice… But of course, all that would be insignificant without great songs as vehicles for that voice. Thursby has armfuls of them. There’s not an uninteresting moment on this debut LP… an endlessly rewarding recording.’ – Rhythms magazine

‘An intriguing sketch of brilliant songwriting… The band has delivered a masterpiece… “A Thief’s Journal” goes straight to the poolroom.’ – Rave Magazine (BRIS)

‘Lyrics from Bob Dylan’s new album? No, from Floyd Thursby’s debut self-titled 5-track CD. Go see him and hear for yourself. A powerful new addition to Australia’s most original singer/songwriters.’ – Billy Pinnell

Vietnamese Lacquer Painting Exhibition in Korea

Exhibition: 15 – 20 Jul 2015

Ganaisa Art Center

Seoul, Korea

From the organizer:

Lacquer paintings exhibition of 14 Vietnamese artists will be held in Ganaisa Art Center, Seoul from July 15 to July 20, 2015.

Lacquer is a special type of material extracted from lacquer tree, appeared in Vietnam from 2500 years before, often used in making furniture, worshiping items and crafts. In 1925 the French founded the Indochina Fine Arts School, along with the acceptance of the academy art in Europe, Vietnamese lacquer artists transformed the material and put lacquer on their own works. The innovative combinations between material and the traditional way of shaping, between the spiritual life of the Vietnamese and the graphics, layout, color as well as art thought from Europe have created an art material that still highly appreciated by many national and foreign researchers. Many Vietnamese lacquer paintings were stored and kept at national prestigious museums and abroad. More and more foreign artists come to Vietnam to learn the techniques of lacquer.

Due to limited communication, difficulties in transportation and storage as well as lack of thorough understanding and confusion between art and fine art, Vietnamese lacquer is still not known and properly appreciated as its value yet.

42 artworks of 14 Vietnamese artists to Korea will be displayed at Ganaisa Art Exhibition Center, Seoul. This is the art center established since 1983, and from 1991 till now becomes the venue for exhibit many famous names of worldwide contemporary art such as Antoni Tapies (1990), Sam Francis (1991), Jasper Johns ( 1991), Roy Lichtenstein (1991), Joan Miro (1991), Wilfredo Lam (1991). The exhibition will be an opportunity to introduce Vietnamese lacquer art and inspire sense of creativity to all the artists pursuing the art of making lacquer paintings and promote cultural exchanges between the Vietnam and Korea.

• Of the 42 works exhibited, there are 12 works with traditional visual style from the 6 artists Ha Anh Tuan, Nguyen Duc Viet, Nguyen Nghia Dau, Nguyen Tan Cuong, Nguyen Hiep Anh and Duc Hung.

• The rest 30 pieces are of modern visual style from 8 artists: Nguyen Truong Linh (Gold Prize, National Fine Arts Exhibition 2010), Tran Phi Truong, Nguyen Hai Nam, Do Khai, Pham Thang Long, Hoang Huu Van, Ngo Hai Yen and Dang Hien.

• In particular, 3 artists Tran Phi Truong, Do Khai, Nguyen Hai Nam and curator D.G. Tran Quoc Hung are invited to attend the opening ceremony and introduce paintings for the exhibition.

This exhibition of Lacquer paintings in Seoul will contribute to promoting the cooperation and exchange of the art and culture between Vietnam – Korea, as well as introducing Vietnamese cultural traditions to foreign friends in Korea and worldwide. This is also an opportunity for artists to share their view of art and seek for new inspiration, to create more and more high-valuable artworks to serve all art lovers in Korea and Vietnam.
