In honor of Mother’s Day, Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care hosted its 12th Annual Mother’s Day Luncheon on Friday, May 10 at the Coral Casino of the Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore. Each year at this unique Mother’s Day event, we honor two mothers – one living and one in memory – and celebrate their lives and acknowledge their contributions to the community.
This year, VNHC was proud to honor mother and local philanthropist Barbara Ireland. Guests listened to several moving tributes from her daughters Mary, Kathy, and Cynthia (in absentia). Barbara has devoted herself to charitable causes in the Santa Barbara community for decades, notably The Barbara Ireland Walk for Breast Cancer Research, which just marked its thirteenth year.
Also honored in memory that day was LaVerne (Bebe) Browning, who passed away in 2011. Bebe was the mother of past VNHC Board member and past Chair of the Board Charles Browning. Charles shared touching reflections about his mother, who passed away at 97 years young, and will always be remembered for the unconditional love she had for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
325 guests were welcomed with festive cocktails and refreshments as they perused the 109 Silent Auction items. After mingling and placing bids, guests were invited inside the La Pacifica Ballroom for lunch. Catherine Remak, the mistress of ceremonies for the day, welcomed guests and shared her own personal experience with hospice when her mother passed away. Lynda Tanner, President & CEO of VNHC, then recognized the many wonderful supporters and sponsors of the event, including Premier Rose Sponsor Impulse Advanced Communications. Co-Chairs Jodi Fishman-Osti and Pamela Dillman Haskell and their wonderful event committee were all gifted roses in gratitude for their hard work and dedication to such a special event.
After enjoying a delicious salad and Miso Roasted Black Cod, the audience listened to a heartfelt personal story shared by Toni Percival about the hospice care that VNHC provided to her mother and family. She described how VNHC was there when she and her family needed them most, at the end of her mother’s life. Andrew Firestone, auctioneer for the event, reiterated Percival’s sentiments about the importance of hospice care and the wonderful work of the nurses. He then began the bidding wars and excited the audience with five Live Auction items, including a visit to the Reagan Ranch, a private dinner prepared by Chef Dario Furlati of Ca’Dario, American Idol Finale tickets, a Trip to Vancouver, and “Wine Country Delights” featuring a VIP tour and tasting at Melville Winery with Ron Melville and private cooking class with Leonardo Curti of Trattoria Grappolo.
This year’s event raised over $255,000 which will directly benefit our mission to provide high quality, comprehensive home health, hospice, and related services necessary to promote the health and wellbeing of all community residents, including those unable to pay.
