New Orleans Shava has been named the Best New Restaurant in America 2015 by Esquire magazine.
The announcement was published online Oct. 13, and Ted Allen writes that this year’s winner came from "...of all places, New Orleans,” before delving into praise for Shaya’s pomegranate-lacquered lamb.
Allen writes:
“…if you doubt that pita and tabbouleh could merit such an accolade, consider that their elevation comes at the hand of a chef, Alon Shaya, who has cooked for NoLa revolutionary John Besh since his first of (now) twelve restaurants began transforming that former time-capsule culture of Commander's Palace and Brennan's.”
The honor comes on the heels of several accolades for the restaurant, including the James Beard Award for Best Chef: South, which Shaya snagged in May. In August, Bon Appetit magazine named Shaya among its 50 nominees for America’s Best New Restaurants 2015.
Shaya, who helped open the rustic Italian eatery Domenica and the Uptown spin-off Pizza Domenica, opened his namesake restaurant on Magazine Street in February, serving modern takes on Israeli cuisine that showcase the Mediterranean and Easter European influence on his homeland.
