Vivint™, the largest home automation services company in North America, is celebrating National Fire Safety and Prevention Month by protecting more homes and saving lives through its home automation solutions.

“Vivint is committed to making homes safe for families,” said Todd Pedersen, founder and CEO of Vivint. “With Vivint’s advanced early detection systems, many home fires are preventable and can be stopped in the beginning stages, saving lives.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, on average in the U.S., someone dies in a fire every three hours and someone is injured from a fire every 30 minutes. Young children, the elderly and household pets are an added risk for fire injury or death, especially during the winter months when most residential fires occur. Deaths from fires and burns are the third leading cause of fatal home injury.

David Haddad, a resident of West Des Moines, Iowa, recalls the moment when his Vivint home automation system alerted him of smoke in his house. Within seconds of the alert, a Vivint monitoring professional called him on his cell phone.

“My first thoughts were about my three dogs who were still at home,” Haddad said. “Vivint immediately dispatched the fire department. I arrived home shortly thereafter to find my dogs safe and firefighters taking care of my smoldering garage. I could not have been more pleased.”

Haddad added that some of his friends once questioned him about the need of having a home automation system. They have since changed their minds, acknowledging that the fire could have been much worse without Vivint’s quick response.

Jackie McGuire of Pittsburgh, Pa., credits her Vivint system for saving both her 81-year-old mother and their dog from a kitchen grease fire. Smoke filled the home quickly, and before her mother could call 911, Vivint already had called an emergency contact and alerted the fire department. McGuire added that the fire could have spread and been much worse without Vivint’s quick response.

“Ironically, my mother used to complain that the alarm was too loud,” Jackie said. “Now, I will never turn it down. God was watching over her that day and sent his angels, through Vivint, to save her.”

Vivint reminds people to make sure smoke alarms are on every floor of their home, including the basement, and particularly near rooms in which people sleep. In addition, families should map a fire escape plan that describes two different ways each family member can escape from every room.
