Adamu Adamu, minister of education, has announced the end of Post-UTME (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination) and pegged tertiary admission cut-off at 180.

Speaking at the 2016 policy meeting of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Adamu said tertiary institutions were free to screen applicants, but warned against subjecting them to a second examination process.

“JAMB is one of the most active parastatals in the ministry; I expect that policies that would be beneficial to Nigerian students should be discussed at this meeting,” he said.

“As far as I am concerned, the nation has confidence in what JAMB is doing. The universities should not be holding another examination.

“If the universities have any complain against JAMB, let them bring it and then we address it.

“I believe there should be no ground to lower the quality; November. 30 remains the closing date for 2016 admission. No institution should exceed its quota in admission; we will start issuing penalties to defaulting institutions.”

At the meeting, Dibu Ojerinde, a professor and the JAMB registrar, announced 180 as the minimum cut off mark for tertiary institutions in country.

“One-hundred-and-eighty is given and no institution will go below 180 this year; some universities can go above it, I know Obafemi Awolowo University of Ife, will not go below 200 and University of Lagos will not go below 200, and also University of Ibadan. All these ones stand. But 180 is a bench mark for others.”

Ojerinde said the re-distribution process for candidates is already ongoing as it was embedded in the registration procedure.

“We will get enough candidates to take in all the schools if they are serious,” he said. – Cable NG

The Federal Government on Thursday scrapped the conduct of post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, post UTME, for candidates seeking admission into higher institutions, adding that there was no need for other examination to be conducted by universities after the one conducted by JAMB.

Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, who stated this in Abuja after declaring open the 2016 Combined Policy Meeting on Admissions to Universities, Polytechnics and other higher institutions in Nigeria, said all tertiary institutions were at liberty to conduct screening for candidates seeking admission into any school.

While expressing confidence in the examination conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Adamu said: “As far as I am concerned the nation has confidence in what JAMB is doing. The universities should not be holding another examination and if the universities have any complain against JAMB let them bring it and then we address it.

“If JAMB is qualified enough to conduct tests and they have conducted test then there will be no need to conduct another test for students to gain admission.”

The Federal Government on Thursday ordered that the controversial examinations usually organised by universities in Nigeria for admission seekers after the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations should be scrapped.

The government argued that if there was absolute confidence in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, there should be no need for Universities to conduct internal examinations to determine the fate of candidates seeking admissions.

The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, gave the order at the National Universities Commission in Abuja, while declaring open the 2016 combined policy meeting on admissions to Universities, Polytechnics and other higher institutions in Nigeria.

The combined policy meeting is an annual forum where admission officers and stakeholders from universities, polytechnics and other tertiary institutions converge to debate on common cut-off points for admissions.

Adamu said, “Our universities shouldn’t be conducting another examination; if they have any complaint against JAMB, they should come to the Ministry of Education and we will look into it.

“If JAMB is qualified to conduct the computer-based test and they are conducting the test, then there should be no need for students to sit another examination to get admission

“As far as I am concerned JAMB has built a level of confidence in terms of conducting the UTME. A situation where universities go and conduct other examinations is unnecessary.”

The minister spoke in reaction to a protest by a group of students numbering about 20 at the venue of the meeting.

The protesters who blocked the entrance of the NUC office called on the government, National Assembly and other major stakeholders to put an end to the conduct of Post-UTME.

Adamu also ordered JAMB to stop extra charges for change of course, change of school, among others.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Dr. Folashade Yemi Esan, also reechoed Adamu’s position saying the decision to scrap Post-UTME was unanimously agreed by stakeholders at the meeting.

The meeting, however, agreed that 180 be adopted as general minimum cut-off points for admissions to Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education and other Diploma awarding institutions respectively.

The meeting which was moderated by the Registrar/Chief Executive ofJAMB, Prof. ‘Dibu Ojerinde, also emphasised that preferences for degree-awarding institutions was still on the high side.

According to him, first choice preference for degree-awarding institutions stood at 97.78 per cent as against 1.1 per cent for National Certificate in Education and National Diploma courses. – Punch NG
