New clothes or shoes can be exciting, but I REALLY get excited about new kitchen tools!  I once heard that if you want to become exceptional at something, you must have the best tools, and I agree that you don’t want mediocre supplies and equipment to hold you back from performing, and that especially applies in the kitchen!  If you want to enjoy cooking and really create noteworthy dishes, you need your products to be at the top of their game, and KitchenIQ completely understands.  They aim to make our lives easier and more efficient in the kitchen and a few of their products in particular are doing a great job at exactly that.

I recently invited a few of my new friends over to show them these new KitchenIQ tools and eat some scones together!  The first tool we passed around was the Edge Grip Knife Sharpener.  I found it interesting that KitchenIQ has actually been around for more than a century, specializing in manual and electric knife, scissors and tool sharpeners and edge care products since 1886.  This is one of their most popular sharpeners, a best seller on Amazon, because of its compact size and usefulness.  It is a knife sharpener that is smaller than a computer mouse, and it is capable of both course and fine sharpening.  Carbide blades quickly sharpen dull or damaged knives in just a few passes, while finishing and polishing can be achieved on the “fine” slot, meant for light touch-ups.  You can address the knives that really need a makeover and the ones that just need a small tune up.

It is called the Edge Grip sharpener because it has an indent on the underside that hugs the corner of a table or counter so that you can sharpen large and long knives without the danger of damaging your work space.  It allows for a more comfortable, stable, and ergonomic sharpening regardless of the knife size.  As I passed this around, my friends commented on its small size, since we’re all students and living in small student housing with limited kitchen space.  You could easily find room for this in any of your kitchen drawers, and the finger guards surrounding the ceramic and carbon rods really reduce the possibility of injury.

The next tool is a fun one because of its multi-functionality.  I love the usefulness of this Potato 3-in-1 Peeling Tool and how it can scrub, peel, and chop.  As we passed it around and talked about how nice it is to have everything at your fingertips, we decided that if you cook or prepare potatoes often, this is a must-have.  My husband is from Idaho and potatoes are in his blood, so it was about time I had something like this in our kitchen.

When I pulled out the knife from the end of the tool, I got a fantasticly surprised “Ooo!” from my friends!  One of them mentioned the clear cover that goes over the blade, and how uncommon that is for peelers, making this something safer for the kitchen with kids, especially since removing the knife takes some strength and knowledge to dislodge.

The blade has a food-safe, non-stick, stainless steel coating that keeps food from sticking and it makes the tool easier to clean.  Whip out that knife and you’ve got a handy tool to extract dark spots and nibs, and you can dice up your potato on the spot.  Very handy, KitchenIQ!  This knife is also coated in the food-safe, non-stick coating, and it is the perfectly size paring knife for small, intricate jobs like potatoes, but you could also use it on sorts of root vegetables.  It is also top rack dishwasher safe!

The tool we were most excited about was the Better Zester!  This thing is a beauty!  The more I described it, the more and more appealing it became!  First of all, what you see below are over 100 v-shaped teeth that produce even, uniform, and delicate cuts without force.  The top is also covered in the non-stick coating that allows the citruses to simply glide across the blades.  This also makes for fast and easy clean up.  All of the fine and delicate zest is stored in the underside compartment of the zester, and because measurements have been printed on the clear backing, you can see just exactly how much zest you have collected.  You can measure as you go so that you collect the exact amount needed.  When you’re done, slide the two pieces apart and a squeegie component scrapes down any wayward zests so that everything is removed from the blades and ready to use!

You should have heard the glee in the room when I said I had one for each of them to take home!

After the demos, we were ready to make the glaze for our scones!  The process is so easy, and the Better Zester makes it 10x more fun.  All you need is the zest from one lemon dumped into a small bowl.

Use that same lemon and squeeze out all the juice.  Lastly, add powdered sugar until you achieve your desired consistency.  With one lemon, I use probably half a cup of powdered sugar.  For a thin drizzle consistency, use less, and for a thick syrupy topping, use more sugar.  Its really that easy!

And on top of pastries, it tastes like Sunday morning.  You can find my recipe for the scones, as well as this glaze used with LIMES instead of lemons here: Raspberry Lime Scones Recipe.

Add some whipped cream on top, and you’ve got yourself a very dangerous dessert on your hands.

Directions:

Use your zester to collect the zest from one lemon and dump into a small bowl.

Squeeze out all the juice of your zested lemon and add to the bowl, removing seeds.

Add powdered sugar until you achieve your desired consistency.  Start with 1/2 cup of powdered sugar and go from there.

Store in the fridge until ready to use.

Thanks for making our fun night possible, KitchenIQ!
