This is a sponsored conversation on behalf of Doctor On Demand. All opinions are my own.
I’m sure many of you have felt the rising cost of healthcare. I know that I have. A few months ago I broke my toe and had to visit our local emergency room, then had to have a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon just in case I’d need his services. To say that I was shocked by the amount we and the insurance company were billed would be an understatement. I can certainly see why and how people go without healthcare. Despite the fact that I needed to go to the hospital since I had a broken bone (although nothing could be done for it), the whole experience was kind of a hassle. The appointments, traveling to and from appointments, arranging childcare or bringing my toddler to the office… there’s a lot of extraneous things that go into visiting the doctor. I was left wishing there was another way to go about doctor visits in general, and that’s when I heard about Doctor On Demand.
Doctor On Demand is an innovative new way for you to have instantaneous access to a doctor (on demand!), all from the comfort of your own home via your smart phone or tablet. It’s really revolutionary! You simply download the FREE app and register. Then, you’ll have access to video-call a licensed and board certified doctor right then and there or anytime you need to after the fact. You pay for the service only when you use it and it’s just $40 (which is the same as most co-pays). This app is bringing the concept of telemedicine right to the forefront and letting everyday people like us have access to doctors without the wait and excessive costs. I’m honestly, truly impressed with the whole idea and the technology behind it.
I recently had the opportunity to place a call to a Doctor On Demand provider (at no cost to facilitate this post). It was timed well since my little guy just happened to be suffering from ringworm (gross!). I’d already gotten a prescription written for him, but I wanted to see what the Doctor On Demand would have to say.
I simply downloaded the app, registered. Before I could make the call, I had to identify whether I was calling for myself or someone else, plus input some basic information like symptoms and allergy information. When I went to to make the call, I was a little puzzled as to why I had to turn on “location services”, but then realized that the app needs to know your location so they can put you in touch with a doctor that’s located in the same state as you. That way, if you live in Ohio but are vacationing in Florida, you’ll talk to a doctor in Florida. That’s for both legal reasons and for prescription writing purposes. Next you’ll put in your billing information, then you’ll be in queue to talk to a highly educated doctor with years of experience under their belt. As a side note, all of the doctors undergo background testing before joining the Doctor On Demand team.
After a very brief waiting period, and I mean BRIEF as it was less than 30 seconds, I was connected to the Doctor On Demand. We were able to chat via video (as required by Florida law) and he asked for my permission to treat (also required by law). He was very, very nice and we started discussing my son’s ringworm. Since this was a review situation, I told him that I’d already had a prescription for Ketoconazole but wanted to discuss how he would go about treating my little guy. He shared with me that if indicated, you’d upload a photo using the unique photo uploader option in the app itself (which is so cool and probably a lot better than trying to get a squirmy toddler to hold still for video chat). He then told me that the Ketoconazole was fine, but probably overkill and that he would have written a prescription for Clotrimazole since that’s generally safer for toddlers. We went on to discuss the app itself and how he can treat someone, send the records to their primary care provider, upload their information and prescription needs into the system, then have the prescription sent to the patient’s local pharmacy. It was an awesome experience and I really like knowing that I can have a simple medical problem looked at almost immediately by a board certified physician, and get a prescription right away if indicated.
Of course, there are certain things that the Doctor On Demand can’t and shouldn’t treat since video technology is not a full replacement for all medical care. Emergent situations like chest pain or pressure, poisoning, seizures, serious head, neck or back injury, and broken bones need to be treated right away by your local hospital. They also cannot write prescription for controlled substances.
Doctor On Demand is more appropriate for the following examples:
Cold, cough, flu, or allergies
Rash, Pink eye, hay-fever
Non-emergent Asthma
Bladder infections
Pediatric questions
Most cases that are not life threatening
Prescriptions refills
Referral to a specialist
Overall, I had an excellent experience with Doctor On Demand. It’s ultra convenient, especially for me with a toddler to care for at home. He isn’t exactly calm in waiting and examination rooms so this seems like a much better option for non-emergent health ailments. At only $40, this is actually a little cheaper than some of my co-pays and I don’t even have to leave the house. This app exceeded all of my expectations and I’m really satisfied with my experience using this innovative service. I would, without a doubt, use this app again.
