On March 21, 2014, SeaWorld will be celebrating its 50-year anniversary. The first SeaWorld park opened in March 1964 in Mission Bay, San Diego, California, and SeaWorld remains among the premier San Diego attractions. To mark the milestone, March 21st kicks off an 18-month-long celebration that will be bringing more entertainment and a “Sea of Surprises” to all three of the SeaWorld park locations in San Diego, San Antonio, and Orlando.

New Entertainment

SeaWorld wants to make this year-and-a-half-long celebration explode with excitement. The park will be amping up its entertainment with a new evening show and fireworks finales to bring new elements for even the most seasoned visitors. Plus, the SeaWorld parks will also feature a few roaming elements to make just walking through the park more dynamic and interactive.

One of these roaming shows will be Splash Dance, a slapstick comedy, water-bucket juggling dance production designed to be high-energy for the audience.

Along with Splash Dance, another entertainment feature will be the “mobile bubble lab” driven by an “eccentric inventor” on the quest for the perfect bubble. The bubble lab will be driven through the park and will leave a trail of bubbles wherever it goes, a feature that kids will surely love.

More Animal Encounters

SeaWorld will also be welcoming more “animal ambassadors” into its gates this season. From eagles to flamingos, animal ambassadors are animals who make appearances throughout the park to provide close-up, interactive encounters with guests. Many of these ambassadors are animals who have been rescued by the SeaWorld Rescue Team after injury or abandonment in the wild. Once the animals are rehabilitated, these animal ambassadors help educate park guests about different animal species and the threats they face in the wild.

SeaWorld San Diego will also change the park’s arrival experience. San Diego guests will enter through Explorer’s Reef (the above photo is the concept art from SeaWorld’s planning), an “undersea oasis” experience that will connect guests to multiple touch pools with cleaner fish, rays, and more. Sea of Surprises

Part of the “Sea of Surprises” will be the new Surprise Squad. This squad will start popping up in the park to give guests unexpected gifts, discounts, and deals, plus SeaWorld promises a few huge surprises will also be in that mix. Whatever the prize is, the Surprise Squad will delight guests with free stuff that could range from food items, to t-shirts, to exclusive experiences.

Art in the Park

SeaWorld will also be decorating areas of the park with recycled art displays by Washed Ashore, a non-profit group that collects litter washed up on the ocean shore and uses it to make art. SeaWorld will be displaying these big, sea-themed sculptures (some weigh over half a ton!) to support Washed Ashore’s effort: drawing awareness to how much trash ends up in our oceans and the dangers that pollution poses to sea life.

Whether you’re a SeaWorld regular or a first-time guest, this spring will be a great time to experience SeaWorld San Diego as the park celebrates 50 years. Can’t make it right away? No problem! The celebration will last 18 months, so plan your trip now to get in on the added entertainment and excitement. Read more about the celebration on SeaWorld’s site.
