It’s that time of year where Trolls, Vikings, and people from around the world come to the North Dakota State Fair Center to celebrate the heritage of 5 Nordic Countries. The five Nordic countries that are represented are Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, and Sweden. For 39 years Norsk Høstfest has kept people entertained and this year we are outlining a few things to try and experience while at the festival this year.
Lefse
Lefse is a traditional Norwegian flatbread that is made from flour, potatoes, butter and milk or cream. At Høstfest, they will be making it fresh on a round flat griddle. Lefse can be served plain, with butter, sugar or with cinnamon. Bring some home and spread some peanut butter on it, maybe some chocolate hazelnut spread if you are feeling adventurous!
Spud Hog
Spud Hogs are sure to satisfy your cravings! A potato baked to perfection with a sausage in the middle of it. That’s right, they drill a hole in the potato, and stick a sausage in there… delicious! Once its bakes to perfection, it can be loaded with toppings of your choice.
Great Hall of Vikings
The Great Hall of Viking will host a variety of stage performers including Chicago, Daniel O’Donnell, Sara Evan, Big and Rich, EmmyLou Harris, Tommy James and the Shondells, Dwight Yoakam and Neil Sedaka. There are still tickets available for each concert, so check them out.
Viking on a Stick
Imagine this: a giant skewered seasoned meatball, dipped in batter and fried golden-brown. Eat this Høstfest favorite like a corndog, and be sure to get some ketchup to dip it in.
Solli-Tangen
Traveling all the way from Telemark, Norway, the Solli-Tangen brothers, Didrick and Emil are set to perform every day in Oslo Hall. These classically trained opera singers are entertaining, and their voices are completely captivating. Their seven piece orchestra will be enhance their performances at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Viking Village
While in Viking Village you can check out crafts, hand-made goods, learn about life in the 8th-11th centuries and experience Viking Fights! During the fights, can cheer on your favorite Viking as you hear swords and axes hit the chainmail and shields.
Steffen Jakobsen
This country artist appeared on Norway’s “Idol” in 2013. His deep baritone voice will have you tapping your toes at 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. inside of Oslo Hall.
Trolls, trolls, everywhere!
Watch out for those Trolls strolling down Chester Avenue. These life-size storytellers are sure to enhance your experience with their tales. Not to mention provide a perfect photo opportunity!
Taste of Norway
Eat true Norwegian cuisine at Scandi, and En To Tre, where chefs from Norway fill your palate with traditional recipes. From fish, soups and homemade waffles these restaurants are sure to excite Høstfest goers.
Lutefisk
Lutefisk is a Scandinavian dish where a white fish is soaked in lye. It gives the fish a gelatinous texture, and it’s typically served with potatoes, cranberries, and coleslaw. We know it’s not for everyone, but culturally, it’s one of the most recognizable dishes.
This is only 10 of the fantastic things happening at Høstfest this year. Between shopping, dining, and experiencing culture. Høstfest is sure to not disappoint!
