Cloudera Sessions – a forum dedicated to tackling big data problems with Hadoop and making advanced analytics pervasive throughout the organization – was held in New York City in July 2015. The event brought together a stellar community of Cloudera partners, business executives, data scientists and IT staff from Fortune 500 and Global 2000 companies from several industries including healthcare, life sciences, insurance and financial services.
The day was packed with a series of excellent presentations from Experian, FINRA, Intel, Accenture, SAS, Informatica and our very own Clouderans including – Data Evangelist, Steve Totman and Mike Olson, Chief Strategy Officer who kick-started the session with a thought-provoking keynote.
The presentations were focused on business applications that are in live production. They covered a gamut of use cases including detecting and preventing financial fraud, enforcing regulatory compliance, cyber security and customer 360 initiatives. For instance, FINRA spoke of their implementation of an Enterprise Data Hub (EDH) to build a holistic picture of the US securities market by collecting, processing and monitoring 50 billion daily events. While Experian shared their insights on using an EDH to drive innovation and gain access to new data sources for various customer 360 initiatives such as behavior-based segmentation at a granular level.
Speakers also addressed key challenges around data silos, data management, security and governance. And best practices for overcoming these with an EDH. Fellow Clouderan – Steve Totman – along with Accenture dove deep into how an EDH powered by Hadoop is used in Financial Services to address complex regulatory stipulations stemming from CCAR, Dodd-Frank and for risk data aggregation and reporting, among others.
A number of recorded presentations from Cloudera Sessions will be made available on the Cloudera website including Mike Olson’s keynote. So please stay tuned!
Overall, Cloudera Sessions was an excellent opportunity for attendees to better understand the true potential of using an EDH powered by Hadoop via strategic and mission-critical use cases that are in live production. Participants were able to network with peers that are in different stages of their own data journey. Ask questions and gain valuable insights from best practices espoused by others.
