Guilty of Curiosity Part 2

Cleaning up after a party at your own place is not fun but even worse is cleaning up someone else's party. Katie started with collecting all the disposable dishes tossing them into large garbage bags. Bending down to pick up things still felt very strange, nothing seemed to be in the right distance and she got quite dizzy after a while. Must be down to the glasses somehow she thought. Her phone vibrated and she opened a Whatsapp message sent by someone whose number wasn't saved on her phone.

"Hi honey, just wondering how you and your hangover are doing. Loved dancing with you last night my sexy secretary. Kiss Dave"

What? Honey? Dancing? Sexy secretary? David? That was too much for her, she had to sit down and process the shock. Apparently she missed out on some rather relevant events last night. Or at least wasn't aware of them anymore. Was this message maybe intended for someone else? Possibly for Vanessa? What if she would make a fool of herself by replying to him? Okay, secretary must refer to glasses she thought and dancing she was well capable of. But that still left Vanessa in the equation. It is too early for complex thinking Katie, she told herself, you should go ahead with the tasks right in front of you.
She had basically finished collecting everything what could remind of a wild party and luckily nothing was broken or seriously damaged. The things left to do were sweeping the floor and reassembling all the furniture that had been moved for whatever purpose. But first the rubbish bags. She took three of them at a time and went outside to dump them into the garbage container. Fearing how the smell of the container might interact with the already sickly feeling in her stomach she opened the lid and couldn't believe her eyes. In between all the garbage was something she immediately recognized as hers - a rather expensive winter coat. Why would somebody put her coat in the trash? Too many questions for one day she thought, retrieved her coat from the container and went back to the house. She had a bad feeling about everything somehow and there was no one to talk to about this as it might just make matters worse.
Her phone buzzed again and she received another Whatsapp from the same number.

"btw I loved the look of your turquoise frames. You should really wear them to university. And pls don't worry about the thick lenses, they look more than appealing to me"

Katie took off the glasses to have a closer look at them. The lenses were not exactly thick, at the edges they stood out of the frame a little bit and seemed to reflect light strangely when you looked at them from the side. She could make out a number of rings depending on the angle of view. The frames indeed had some turquoise elements on the inside but they still were mainly black. Vanessa's glasses were definitely black and yellow so it has to be me he is addressing, she thought. Holding them closer to her eyes she saw the brand name on the temples and had to admit she was pleased it was one of the better ones. Indeed the glasses looked very fashionable and rather new or at least with no signs of wear. She went to the mirror to get a look at her confused self and found that she actually quite liked what she saw. The frame was not as thin as Lucy's and made of plastic. In her phone she still had the picture of her first glasses experience saved and found that while Lucy's glasses looked good on her, these ones really added something to her appearance. Plus they seemed to fit perfectly. If only I knew why I suddenly need glasses and where these come from she thought.
Back inside Katie started to put chairs and furniture back in place. She had been smart enough to take photos of the rooms before the party in order to restore everything to normal quickly. Going through the photo gallery she discovered quite a few selfies from last night on her phone, it actually seemed like she had been taking one with every single party guest. What struck her was that the first 10 or so showed her like she remembered herself at the party. All the other ones showed her with glasses, overly happy and somewhat drunk. When she looked up the times the pictures were taken she found that there was a gap of over an hour in between a bare face and glasses. So this hour I have to be after she said to herself.
Katie had to hurry finishing the rest of the cleaning as she had to sign up for next semester's courses this afternoon. There had been a server dysfunction last week and as it always is the tech guys were still on it. This resulted in their online administration not being accessible so they actually had to show up at the students' office and register for their courses and examinations. When she was finally done she checked every room one last time to make sure everything was in its right place for the return of Kara's parents. From Kara's room she borrowed an empty glasses case if she needed to store the mysterious glasses, grabbed her dirty coat and headed off to university.
Arriving at the students' office early she met many fellow students queuing in front of the door. She talked to Trevor and Janet who had been at Kara's party as well and asked them about whether they knew what had happened to her coat.

"That sounds terrible Katie, I can't imagine why someone would do that" Janet said "I only know that you still had it on when you returned from your flat. But later we went home while you were still there dancing with David, and then you didn't wear it of course."

I returned from my flat? Katie was puzzled. Why would I have gone home in the middle of the party?

"And by the way" Trevor added "We both think you really suit your glasses Katie, you shouldn't feel like you need to bother with your contacts anymore. Our turn, see you later."

They went into the office and left Katie to her thoughts. Apparently I went off somewhere else when the party was still on and returned with these glasses. This must have happened in the time gap I saw in my photos.
It was her turn for the registration now and she went into the office with her student ID and drivers license ready in hand. She found she had made the way for only two signatures and was rather disappointed at that. The only thing she wanted to do now was go home, drink a large cup of tea and go to bed. This day had been far too much for her. Another message from David reached her while she was walking for the parking lot.

"Hello there beautiful. How about dinner tonight? And bring your glasses..."

This was not really the shy and gentle boy she had expected David to be and she started to wonder if it really was him texting her. Or was it just some weirdo leaving inappropriate comments about glasses on any occasion. Maybe someone who'd seen her at the party and found out her number? Vanessa interrupted her thoughts before she reached her car.

"Katie I need to talk to you please."
In front of her stood a sad and timid looking Vanessa and Katie had a hard time not pitying her immediately.
"Sure Vanessa, what is it?"
"I am ashamed and deeply sorry about something I have done to you."

*****

Katie drove home and picked up some takeaway dinner on the way. Her mind just wouldn't come to rest. Too many things had happened today and she still hadn't had the time to sort them all out for herself. She needed sleep. Plus her eyes still hurt, it felt like somebody was constantly putting fine sand into them. She had to find the eye drops she bought some time ago. The conversation with Vanessa jumped to her mind again, that poor girl. It was brave of her to have come forward with that confession, yet she couldn't decide what to make of it. Apparently Vanessa had madly fallen in love with David and according to her explanation only did it because of that. Still a bit of an overreaction Katie thought. Vanessa had explained she'd had a few drinks and wasn't her normal self anymore. That's why she couldn't handle David redirecting his full attention towards Katie when she showed up in glasses and even dancing with her. In a mixed panic and revenge reaction Vanessa then must have dumped Katie's coat into the garbage container. Confessing that to her was a very courageous and almost noble action Katie had to admit. And yet she saw Vanessa as a competitor and now even had to wash her jacket.
Arriving home she decided to skip dinner and go to bed straight away. She brushed her teeth, set the alarm clock on her phone, lay down and turned off the light. Something didn't feel right. Her eyes hurt even more when she closed them and she remembered she had wanted to look for the eye drops. In her kitchen she had a drawer with all sorts of first aid stuff. She found the eye drops in there and put some in each eye. They soothed away the sandy feeling immediately and she actually felt much more comfortable straight away. On the way back to her bed Katie remembered her dirty coat and the garbage container smell it had on it. Oh well she thought, I better get that done right away. The small label inside said hand wash only but she couldn't be bothered at this time. So she went over to the washing machine and started emptying the contents of the coats pockets onto it. Out came a lipstick, a bottle opener, tissues and some receipts. One of the latter caught her attention, it was a pharmacy receipt and she was very sure she hadn't been to a pharmacy in the past three months. She knew the name, it was part of the new mall complex in town and they advertised themselves on the radio with their 24/7 service. On the receipt she couldn't make out what it was for as the paper was pretty crumpled and hardly readable. Apart from the companies name and address only the time of purchase was still visible. And that was right in the middle of the time she missed out on.

*****

Katie woke up early and felt like she'd had a really good rest. It was still dark outside and looking at her alarm clock she saw - a red blur. She moved it closer. It showed it was 6.30 a.m., too early to really be awake on a Saturday morning.
So she still needed glasses. They were on her bedside table but she resisted putting them on and rather thought about her new situation as a glasses wearer. Somehow she didn't mind needing glasses, in fact she was kind of intrigued by the idea. She had always wondered what it was like to need glasses and even envied good looking people who wore them. The few times she tried somebody else's glasses on always gave her a good feeling in a way. They felt real and she could feel the strength looking through the lenses. It always had made her curious of how you'd see bare eyed as a glasses wearer. She could never have bought herself fake glasses. It was hard to describe but now that she seemed to need glasses she felt like a wish had come true. There was a bad taste to it though as she still didn't know how she had gotten herself in this situation.
With these thoughts she drifted off into sleep again. David and her kissed passionately, her glasses steamed up and she wanted to take them off but he wouldn't let her. Vanessa came, ripped the glasses off her face and threw them to the ground. Katie couldn't see anymore and desperately tried to make out where they had landed. She wanted David to help her but as soon as she had lost her glasses it was as if he didn't see her anymore. In tears she searched the floor but couldn't find them.
Katie woke up with her heart pounding and breathing heavily. Her hand automatically moved to her bedside table. They were there. It had been a dream.

"Okay Katie, let's shed some light on this darkness. Get up. Go shower." she loudly said to herself.

After breakfast she remembered she hadn't answered any of David's messages.

"Hi Dave sorry I didn't reply yesterday. I had a strange day and was still pretty hung over. Would love to meet you for dinner today, are you still up for it? Kisses"

She got dressed quickly and went to her mirror to put on some light makeup. For that the glasses were in the way so she had to take them off. While her vision was terrible in general she actually found putting makeup on was much more comfortable compared to two days ago. As soon as she was happy with her efforts the glasses came back on for a proper look at the mirror. The lenses made her eyes appear smaller than they were but more intense somehow. Indeed everything behind the glasses looked smaller and they even distorted the curvature of her face. Must be because of their strength, Katie thought, because Vanessa's glasses don't do that. I will have to remember this tomorrow and apply a different makeup around the eyes to make them seem bigger. She was satisfied though, looking back at her from the mirror stood a very attractive young lady with dark hair, lightly tanned skin, appealing physical built and a striking pair of black and turquoise glasses. Don't you dare to reject me David.
Confidently Katie put on a rather light coat and went to look for her car key. She put the strange receipt in her pocket along with Kara's glasses case and headed off for the parking lot.

The mall was very busy and all the people seemed more than eager to do their weekend shopping in no time. Katie bought a coffee first and sat down to make up a story to tell at the pharmacy. They would probably think something was wrong with her if she just went in there asking what she had bought two days ago. She had to say something else. Finally she came up with an idea. I'm sorry Kara, she thought.
Making her way in between overloaded shopping carts, annoyed dads and determined moms with their children she made her way to the pharmacy.

"Katie! Is that you?" came a shout from behind her. It was her aunt, loud and chatty Aunt Jodie.
"Oh hi Jodie. How are you? Busy shopping as anybody?"
"Sure I am Katie - but - look at you! Wearing glasses! I always told your mom you may need glasses but she would never listen. You always had that strange look, like a fish trying to focus on things in the distance you know."
"Well thanks for the compliment Aunt Jodie." Katie answered sarcastically. Her aunt didn't mean it in a bad way, she knew, it was just her strange manners that Katie couldn't quite get used to.
"You know Jodie, I really have to get going or I will miss my appointment. Say hello to Daniel and the kids and tell them I'm gonna be around shortly, okay?"
"I sure will do that and I'll tell everybody what a beautiful four-eyed niece I have know. Take care Katie, I'll see you soon."

No bloody way back now, Katie angrily thought. Out of all the people in the world she had to meet just Aunt Jodie. My whole family is going to know I wear glasses within hours, that's for sure. And they will all want to know why. I better get on with finding out how this all happened.
She walked straight into the pharmacy and was impressed with its size. You could get all sorts of health related things there, they even had their own shoe maker for special orthopaedic devices. Katie went to the main counter.

"Hi, my friend Kara bought some anti flu tablets here two days ago and gave me the receipt to get some more. Now I happen to have crumpled it in my coat pocket as you see. I was wondering if you could help and tell me what it is for."
"Let's see" the woman said "This looks really damaged. It is from us I can tell but not much more I'm afraid. This is the time of purchase and this here, oh this actually means she bought it at our optician. I didn't know they sell any medication. You may want to go there and ask them yourself, it's right over there."

Did SHE really buy these glasses? But how was it possible that my eyes got so bad that quick? With a strange feeling in her stomach Katie went over to the optician. She was welcomed by a guy her age who seemed to be the only one in the shop.

"Hello there, how may I help you?"

She told him the same story leaving out the part with the flu medication and hoping he wouldn't tell her she was wrong here right away.

"I would love to check on this article for you" he said "but unfortunately we are having some difficulties with our computers at the moment and I can't access the sales history. Maintenance is on it and they are running an update at this moment but it will still take some time. As soon as we're back online it shouldn't be a problem to identify the order as there never are many customers on a Thursday night."
"Okay thank you" Katie replied "I guess I'll just come back tomorrow then."
"Hang on for a second please, are you having issues with your eyes? They seem quite stressed to me and even a bit bloodshot somehow. Are you experiencing trouble seeing?"
"I'm fine I guess. I just haven't put in my eye drops today" Katie lied. She hadn't been aware of the fact that this strange and sandy feeling in her eyes might be visible to eye care professionals.
"Well if you say so. I would have offered you a free eye examination otherwise."

Katie contemplated that. What could she loose? She knew she needed these glasses, wherever they came from, but it sure would be interesting to know how much she needed them. Plus the guy was very friendly and seemed to be honestly interested in helping her out.

"Let's do the eye test if you don't mind. I don't even remember when I had my last one." She felt bad about lying to him but what could she do.
"My name is Colin by the way and I am the ECP here. Not the store manager unfortunately - yet" he said with a twinkle.
"I'm Katie. It's very kind of you to give me a free eye examination."
"Alright Katie, I need you to sit down here without your glasses and rest your chin on this bridge. The machine is called an autorefractor and it objectively measures your visual acuity. You don't need to do anything apart from keeping your eyes open and focus on the picture displayed."
Katie saw a house with a red roof which was blurry and out of centre first, and then, with some rattling of the machine, became clear. That got repeated three times and then she heard the sound of a matrix printer.
"Do you happen to remember your previous prescription Katie? This one shows a moderate minus script. To me your glasses look a fair bit stronger though."
So I am nearsighted, Katie thought. Same as Lucy, being nearsighted must mean I can see close things really well and things in the distance not so good.
"Sorry I don't remember my prescription, it's been a while you know" she lied.
"Not to worry Katie. Experience tells us that we will have to fine tune your prescription anyway. This machine is called a phoropter and we can manually adjust your acuity with it."

It was really nice of Colin to be so explaining about everything, it somehow gave her a feeling of safety. If she only could tell him the truth about all this and how desperate she was to actually find out what was going on. The phoropter was another machine you had to sit down in front of. Colin then swung the arm with a strange device in front of her eyes and sat down next to her.

He sighed loudly and said "Katie, sorry for being direct but what we do is absolutely useless as long as you are wearing contact lenses. Unless they are only coloured lenses you will have to take them out or I can't measure your eyesight."
"But I don't wear contacts." She was irritated.
"Look. It is clearly visible from a close distance. I can see a thin clear circle around your pupils and when I look from the side the uneven surface of the eye with a contact lens is apparent. If you don't want me to help you I can't force myself upon you."
"No it's not that" she suddenly started crying. The feeling of being helpless in her situation began to arise in her again. "I don't know what is happening to me, two days ago my eyesight was fine and I didn't have glasses."

With wet eyes she looked at his doubtful and yet caring facial expression. I will have to tell him the whole story, she thought.

*****

Colin had sat there and listened to all events, people and feelings Katie had told him about. He seemed to be a very good listener, never interrupted her but followed her tale attentive. Katie was sitting in his office with her "old" vision restored and her glasses in her hands. He had helped her remove the contact lenses from her eyes and it really felt like a big weight having been taken from them. Apparently it had been about time as she learned that you are supposed to take contact lenses out every night in order to give your eyes a rest and prevent them from infection. Wearing them for two days and two nights can't have been good then. Colin assured her though that the reddening would go away within hours and the feeling should return to normal. The real interesting part in his reaction was his complete understanding of her wish to wear real prescription glasses. They had done an eye test after removing the contacts and her result was a 20/15 visual acuity so she didn't need glasses at all. Going by the first autorefractor results Colin estimated the strength of the contacts to be around +3 dioptres but he wasn't able to measure the lenses. The strength of her glasses could be measured with a so-called lensmeter. They were -4 and -4.25 and some more numbers which stood for the astigmatism.

"Look Katie, what you basically did was wearing correction for both farsightedness and nearsightedness at the same time. Physically the strength units which we call dioptres neutralize themselves almost steadily when worn together. The effect for you was that with the contacts you made yourself nearsighted and compensated that with the glasses. Actually you even overcompensated the contacts but not by much."

Wow. Katie was astonished. She had never heard of these things before and was really wondering how she would have acquired this kind of knowledge within an hour in an apparently drunk state of mind.

"Colin, let me get a coffee for both of us. I really appreciate you helping me with all of this but I need to get my head free for a second. Is a Latte alright with you?"

Naturally she put her glasses back on and walked out of the shop leaving a mildly puzzled young man behind. It was much harder seeing properly without the contact lenses. Distant objects appeared clear but it seemed like the whole world was shifting as soon as she moved. Close things were harder to see. When she stopped to look at her cell phone she had to hold it away further than usual to be able to read. Still there was more sharpness and contrast to all the things she really focused on.
She got two coffees in take away cups and returned to the optometrist. There was still no customer so she went straight back to Colin's office.

"There's your coffee, it's still really hot."
"Thank you very much for the invitation. How are you felling now? It must be hard to see without the lenses in especially with the astigmatism correction in the glasses. Why did you put them on again?" he curiously asked her.
"You know I think I really want to wear glasses. I like the feeling and I really like to see myself in them. And of course I will have to be wearing glasses tonight."
"Oh I see" was his sole response.

They sat and drank their coffees in silence and Colin checked some things on the computer. The sales software was back online and he could see that she had indeed been buying +3.00 DPT BC 6.7 DIA 14.2 soft dailies that night. The 'prescription verified' box was ticked which made him wonder how she achieved that. But she probably wouldn't remember anyway.

"Will I be hurting my eyes if I just keep wearing these glasses? I mean like every day? Everybody is expecting me to wear glasses now anyway."
"Basically not. You may develop some myopia meaning nearsightedness over time but that's not for sure. The astigmatism correction will probably give you headaches when wearing them constantly because your eyes don't require it. If you really want to wear glasses you don't need I would recommend an equal prescription without any cylinder."

What an interesting girl he thought. He had never come across somebody who actually wanted to wear glasses without needing them.

"That sounds good, doesn't it? Would you be so nice and put some new lenses into this frame then? That would be so great."
"Sorry Katie, I really can't do this for you. Our business model is to sell lenses with frames. Furthermore we are to only grind lenses with verified prescriptions. Your inquiry doesn't go with any of these two points. I would really love to help you, but I have to stick to the companies' policy."
Hearing this Katie's face turned sad but brightened up immediately when she had an idea.
"Okay then let's say I came here to get my eyes checked because of trouble while driving at night. I then find some nice frames and while making the glasses an error occurs and someone swaps the lenses with -4s by accident. You're such a nice and sweet guy Colin, wouldn't you do that for me?"
Colin blushed. This was quite straight forward and didn't sound like he would be breaking the rules too hard.
"I guess I could do that. You will have to promise me though that you will never return here with these glasses for whatever reason. For an optician it only takes a second to note the difference between a -0.5 script for night driving and a proper -4. And you mustn't reclaim the cost from your insurance as I don't want to get wound up in something illegal."
"Okay, I promise that to you Colin" she beamed at him radiantly.
"Go and select some frames then, I will make up a prescription for you."

The shop had a huge variety of glasses by all kinds of brands. This is gonna be my Christmas present she thought and only had a look at the designer shelves. There were so many good looking frames she couldn't believe it. Some gave her a very serious appearance, others made her appear younger or older and some just made her downright sexy. She looked for a combination of the first and last and came up with three different frames to choose from. These she showed to Colin. He complimented her on her taste and asked if she really was okay to spend that much money. She was and asked him which one he liked best. One he eliminated from the variety because the lenses were too small.

"Forgive me for saying it this way Katie. If you were a normal customer I would recommend this black frame here but to a girlfriend I would recommend the other."

The 'other' was her favourite as well, a red and greyish plastic frame. The material appeared very delicate and extremely elegant. On her face it felt like it was made for her, just a little too light maybe, but Colin promised the lenses would add to its weight.

"Okay I'll take it then. And you will put in minus four lenses?"
"I will have to do it straight away so nobody notices. I did check our stocks for -4s and it seems we only have 1.6 index lenses here in the shop. That means they would stick out of the frame a little bit at the sides. If that is okay with you they will be ready within an hour. I just quickly need to measure your pupillary distance and height again, but that'll only take a second. Bring the new frames" he replied.
"That sounds great! I'll just do some shopping in the meantime and be back in a while. Thank you so much Colin."

They quickly did the measurements, whatever they were for and Katie went off to a clothes shop in order to get something nice and new for tonight. If only David would answer my message she thought. It's been hours since I sent it. While thinking about it she felt her phone vibrating in her hand bag. David.

"Sorry been busy. Dinner sounds good. The Greek place round the corner from the central square? Pick up from your place at 7.30?"

You really have to be brave to ask somebody out on a date in a Greek restaurant she thought. She loved Greek food, but how could he be sure on her opinion towards garlic and onion smell?

"Sure. Meet you there."

Light-hearted she even contemplated buying some 'special' underwear but put the thought aside. Don't rush when you have a crush her grandmother always told her. In the end she only got a light dress to wear as a t-shirt. Combined with Chucks and some skinny jeans it should give her an easy going but also very special look. When a good hour had passes she returned to the optician to collect her glasses. Her first pair of glasses. She was somehow impatient and in joyful anticipation.

"Hi Colin, I'm back."
"Just in time. I literally finished your glasses five minutes ago. Here they are. Try them on and tell me what you think. May I?"
He gently placed the glasses on her face and stepped back to get a full view of her.
"I think you look marvellous in these Katie, they really give you an edge. Can you really see in them though? Some people consider minus four to be a serious level of myopia."
"I can see, and the world looks even more beautiful this way. You've done an amazing job finishing them that quickly. Actually I can see a lot better than in my other ones, the image seems to be more stable somehow."
"Good" Colin replied "Let me just adjust them to your face. They will be even more comfortable to wear afterwards. I have a small gift for you. These are ten daily soft lenses with a power of +2. They are free samples for our customers and you may use them to reduce the power of your glasses if they should give you a hard time. But no extended use" he said with a grin.
"Thank you very much. That's nice. I mean just in case."

As soon as he was done heating up and adjusting the earpieces both were happy with the result and Katie paid for the glasses. She grabbed the glasses case from her handbag to store her 'old' glasses in. When she opened it a card fell out of it onto the counter. Colin looked at it and looked puzzled once again.

"What's up Colin?" Katie asked him.
"This is a copy of a glasses prescription. But it doesn't belong to your glasses. It's sort of strange though, the astigmatism part is almost identical."
"I have no idea but I'll tell you as soon as I know. I hate to say it but I have to get going Colin, it's getting late."
"Remember your promise" he told Katie "These glasses have to remain our secret or I will be in danger of losing my job. And good luck."
"I promise. And thank you so much for everything. You really are an angel." She kissed him on the cheek and went off with an overjoyed feeling. Now she was ready for tonight.

*****

Katie woke up to the sound of her alarm clock. No, it actually was her phone ringing.

"Hello?" she sleepily answered it.
"Katie it's Kara! How have you been?"
"Sleeping" Katie replied "why do you call me this early?"
"It's nice talking to you as well Katie. Bad phone connection, remember? I could only use our neighbours landline now as we are heading off to work in a couple of minutes. How did you get along with my glasses in the end? Did you kiss?"
"Kara, hang on. Your glasses? These are your glasses?"
"They're my old ones, I told you. My real glasses I have with me here. But the old ones were more than strong enough for you. Don't tell me you don't remember anything from the night."
"In fact I don't. But I've been able to reconstruct most of it during the past two days. I suppose you weren't able to check Facebook or Instagram. I'll tell you the whole story."

There was a long silence at the other end and Katie wondered if Kara had just hung up on her. It felt good though to have told her closest friend everything including her most inner feelings.

"Katie. You're crazy." Silence again "But somehow that doesn't surprise me. You can keep my old glasses by the way or donate them, I don't care. But tell me - why are you and David not dating anymore?"
"You know, this is not so easy to explain. Our date was nice and he was very charming and funny. But somehow everything was about glasses. Don't get me wrong, I liked the compliments. I had a feeling though that everything glasses-related was interesting to him an everything that didn't have to do anything with vision he just left aside. He even talked about my future with even stronger vision correction and how much he would like that. I want to be loved for being who I am and not for what I wear. He couldn't know how much I like glasses now as I didn't tell him a single word about it. So in the end I told him it was a very nice night with him and that I don't want to destroy our relationship as very good friends who sometimes do strange things when they're drunk. And that is it."
"Dead on Katie, as always. But sounds like a wise choice. I have to get going now, the others are waiting. I'm happy you decided to stick to your real feelings in every way, and welcome to the club I guess."

Epilogue

The first lecture of a beginning semester was always the one the most attended. Katie was late and entering the lecture hall she was surprised students even sat on the stairs. She stopped as soon as she went in to get a view on who was sitting where and noticed David in the third row in avid conversation with a glasses wearing girl. Two rows behind them she spotted Vanessa with a grieving expression on her face. She wore her glasses but you could still see her smeared make up. Katie felt sorry for her. Her coat was long forgotten.
When the lecture was over she waited for Vanessa in front of her locker. She really looked like being close to crying and that even got worse when she spotted Katie.

"I guess we both lost then" she said to Katie.
"It's alright Vanessa. I'm not in the game anymore. If you really want to win the game, and I would seriously contemplate that, these may be of use to you."

Saying that she gave Vanessa Kara's old glasses together with the contacts from the optician, turned around and went off.

Time to meet Colin now.
