You have to be 18 years old or older. This is the minimum age to go through the naturalization process.
You need to prove that you have lived in the U.S. for five years, consecutively. The permanent resident card is also referred to as a green card. It indicates the date upon which you were allowed permanent residency in the United States. You can use this card to show that you have had permanent residency for at least 5 years.
However, if you have been married to a U.S. citizen you can gain your citizenship after living with them in the U.S. for three years. Also, if you have been in the U.S. armed forces for more than 12 months you can apply for U.S. citizenship.
Unfortunately, if you at some stage left the U.S. for more than six months then you could have negatively affected your permanent residency, and would have to make up time to be able to qualify for your citizenship.
What do you need to apply for the U.S. citizenship?
Completed Form N-400
Two passport style photographs
Tax returns
Marriage Certificate, Divorce Decree, etc.
There may be some additional documents needed for you!
Once you have submitted all documents you will then receive an appointment letter from the USCIS. You will be required to give fingerprints. Also, you will be interviewed by the USCIS officer. This interview process entails answering questions about the applications, as well as your background. Following the interviews you would be required to take civic and English tests. After this, all that is left to do is wait for the final outcome.
