It’s Red Nose Day 2016, and if you’ve seen celebrities and friends wearing red clown noses, you may wonder why! Red Nose Day is designed to benefit children in America and overseas, aiming to lift them out of poverty, reaching some of the poorest communities in the world. Twitter even gave the event its own special red nose icon!



It was organized by Comic Relief, and you can participate by purchasing a red clown nose at Walgreens.  The red nose was chosen because it represents clowns, a universal symbol for fun. Fun is what the event was created for! The event has raised over $1 billion dollars globally, and it’s exciting to see how they’ll do this year.

The NBC special for the event airs at 9/8 central on Thursday, May 26 and will feature over 65 celebrities! The special is LIVE and will run for two hours with a big night of “fun and laughs.”

The big names promised include the following comedians, actors and other performers:

Elton John, Julia Roberts, Will Ferrell, Blake Shelton, Ellen DeGeneres, Jack Black, Tracy Morgan, Kobe Bryant, Paul Rudd, Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Jay Leno, Celine Dion, Anna Kendrick, Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Bono, Ellie Kemper, Blake Griffin, Connie Britton, Mel B, Bill Gates, Tyler Perry, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Vince Vaughn and Sarah Silverman will appear in the FUN-raising special, along with Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, Kristen Bell, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Rose Byrne, Chloë Grace Moretz, Steve Buscemi, Danny Trejo, Adam Devine, Ron Funches, Jane Lynch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Goldblum, Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown, Dax Shepard, Mayim Bialik, Jay Pharaoh and Trevor Noah, Iwan Rheon, Chris Hardwick, Yvette Nicole Brown, Retta, David Morrissey, Jon Daly, Margot Robbie, Kate Micucci, Malin Akerman, Tony Hale and Grace Helbig.

Other celebrities may appear as well, as the event is live! This year the special will be hosted by Craig Ferguson.

Red Nose Day 2016 has plenty of ideas for you to do your part in the event. You can download a tool kit on their website below, or take a selfie with your red nose – don’t forget to use the hashtag #RedNoseDay!

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a foundation created by Microsoft founder Bill Gates, is going to donate $10 to child poverty for every retweet of their #RedNoseTweet too! They are supporting partners of the event, so it’s not a scam.

The Today Show has a way for you to support Red Nose Day as well. You can call or text the numbers below to make a $10 donation. The staff and other supporters cycled 10,000 miles on stationary bikes for the beginning of Red Nose Day on the Today Show!
