It’s no surprise that social media and Pinterest have taken digital marketing in a new direction, but where is that path heading for 2014?

Each and every social media site is gaining more followers every day. As technology becomes more of a crutch than human interaction, the number of hours spent on social media grows every day as well.

While all social networks are expanding, some will be more profitable to you than others. Not only should Pinterest be near the top of your strategy list for 2014, it provides a board to help highlight the latest trends for you.

Pinterest Numbers

Pinterest brings in double the referral traffic of Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+ combined. The site’s numbers are astonishing.

So what is the reason behind Pinterest’s ability to drive consumers to an advertiser’s page and how can you take advantage of it?

Today’s society is a “we want it now, we need it now” instant gratification world. Pinterest works to supply the demand. A consumer sees a pinned item, loves the pinned item, clicks on the item, buys the item and moves on to the next item.

Pinterest has a way of providing the consumer things they didn’t even know they wanted. It embodies the dreams of digital marketing.

• 81% of consumers in the US trust what they find on Pinterest

• Pinterest shoppers spend an average of $169 on online orders

• 36% more likes go to pins with prices

• 20% of referrals to commerce sites from social media are from Pinterest

Know Your Followers

As with any social media platform, Pinterest has a distinct user pattern. Pinterest users are mobile, interested in lifestyle-related topics, such as food, fashion, and family matters, and they are busy during the day, surfing the site mostly in the evening.

If you haven’t connected the dots yet, most of Pinterest users are moms.

What to Pin

Many things were pinned in 2013. However, some topics were more popular than others. By studying some facts from the pins of 2013, here are some ideas to center your 2014 pins around:

• Food: taco cupcakes, churro waffles, and beer-candied bacon

• Travel: The Caves of Jamaica, Icelandic geothermal spas, and the Temples of Myanmar

• Education: Brain breaks, creative writing prompts, and parent involvement

• Technology: 3D printers, wearable technology, and motion sensors

• Health and Fitness: Treadmill plans, medicine balls, and detoxing yoga positions

By understanding what the average consumer asked for last year, it can help you determine what to provide for them this year.

Of course no one wants to be sold “last-season’s” hot item, but trends rarely jump so dramatically that the popular food this year will not be garbage for the animals next year.

Review what has been in demand and be prepared to supply it that type of pins.

Engage Followers

Pinterest is everywhere you and your consumer are. Not only is Pinterest accessible in the palm of every individual with a computer or a smartphone, Pinterest now offers pinnable locations called Place Pins.

Now your consumer can find you and plan a visit specifically around you, as “Place Pins” show what businesses are near you as well.

With Place Pins, you can include your address and phone number so you are easy to contact, all you need to do is select “Add a map” when you are creating a new board or editing and existing board.

Include a “Pin It” button on all your other social media profiles and any company web sites you may have. This allows your current clientele basis to expand with you.

You can also help your engagement with your Pinterest followers by including a call to action, which can mean text or images that instruct your followers how and where they can purchase your merchandise or service.

In fact, adding a call to action to your pins has shown to increase engagement by 80%.

My Opinion

Social media is a great marketing platform that appears to be growing and expanding even more in the future.

By incorporating Pinterest into your marketing strategy, you are bound to increase clientele and become part of an amazing statistic of marketing genius.

With Pinterest, your material gets around, as 80% of pins are re-pins and the average reach per follower is 12.2 in a 30-day period. The potential with Pinterest is almost too vast to understand.

However, you have to make the most of your online presence to take full advantage of the marketing possibilities.
