Donkey Kong is an arcade game released by Nintendo in 1981, an early example of the platform game genre, as the gameplay focuses on maneuvering the main character across a series of platforms while dodging and jumping over obstacles. In the game, Mario (originally named Mr.Video and then Jumpman) must rescue a damsel in distress named Pauline, from a giant ape named Donkey Kong. The hero and ape later became two of Nintendo’s most popular and recognizable characters. Donkey Kong is one of the most important titles from the Golden Age of Arcade Gaming, and is one of the most popular arcade games of all time.

So we welcome with open arms, a new remade version for the Commodore 64.

Oxyron have done a fantastic job while still keeping the feel of the original Arcade version. Noticeable changes in this remake are graphics and layout. A beautiful intro screen and some unique cutesy sprites make this version stand out from the rest, and a LOT prettier and smoother gameplay than the two original C64 releases, (Atarisoft, Ocean). Little Mario has never looked better with his red cap and big nose. :) The whole gameplay area has been reduced to allow the current score and high score viewing from the right side, rather than above, which I actually prefer. SFX, although nothing to write home about, are true to the original. A nice surprise though, a new sid rendition of Donkey Kong Country for the title screen music :) Overall Oxyron’s version is an excellent example of Donkey Kong and will please many Arcade and Commodore 64 fans ;)

This game was released by Oxyron on the 29th October and later trained by Genesis Project (30th October) for X’2016. (Infinite Lives)
