With the 2014 prom season just around the corner I am starting to see some trends happening on my Pinterest boards. The biggest prom trend for 2014 is the 1920′s theme. No doubt inspired by the Great Gatsby movie last year, this year’s new selection of prom dresses have beading and sequins in party worthy colors. Popular 1920′s prom dresses are not the authentic 20s style dresses I usually feature on VintageDancer, instead they are brighter, more dramatic, sexier, and classic prom gowns. They are the perfect mix of contemporary taste and a 1920′s sense of formal glamour.

The Elegant 1920s Evening Dresses
White there are plenty of colorful 1920′s style prom dresses available I still see the trend for everyone’s favorite formal color: black. Coco Chanel, top designer in the 1920′s, is given credit for first making a simple black dress the new trendy style to wear. Black velvet, silk satin and chiffon were the most common evening fabrics in the 1920′s. This Black satin gown with sheer crystal neckline and detail is so elegant! The Modest 1920′s Prom Dress
Think all 20′s dresses were skin flaunting and flashy? Think again. Most 1920′s formal gowns were long, elegant, and simple. Long sleeves were popular on evening dresses as well as shorter “flutter” sleeves in the late 1920′s. This adorable Dusty Rose dress has flutter sleeves and a natural (not drop) waist which is more flattering on fuller body types. The $100 of Less 1920′s Prom Dress
For the budget shopper, sacrificing 1920′s style in not an option. Luckily it doesn’t have to be. Typically longer gowns with more bling on them will be more expensive. Shorter dresses or long gowns with only small clusters of sparkle like this gold gown can be found for less than $100. You can always add more spake to a dress with your jewelry. My own prom gown was similar to this one and I added rhinestones to the waist and strap for more “wow”. This Shimmering taffeta gown comes in several colors and sizes up to 6XL for only $66!
