You might not be familiar with this but here's a short synopsis: In Steven Universe, most of the Gems are aliens from another planet, simply known as Homeworld (or Gem Homeworld). There is an established caste system for the gems (like pearls are a servant race, sapphires are "seers," rubies and quartzs are soldiers, etc.). At the top of the hierarchy are the diamonds. There are four in total - Blue, Yellow, Pink and White. They rule the Homeworld with an iron fist, and all the gems were
especially
designed to serve them. The diamonds were seen as god-like beings by their underlings, but they wouldn't think twice about shattering them (pretty much, that's the Gem equivalent to killing/dying). A gem is created with a specific purpose which they couldn't deviate from, lest they be punished. Gems are forcefully indoctrinated in devoting their lives to the Diamonds, no question asked. They are fanatically devoted to them to the point that they are willing to die for them.

Anyway, the Diamonds conquered several planets, and harvested them for their resources in order to create more gems, at the ultimate cost of the life already established on those planets. Pretty much, they're imperialistic galactic dictators. However, what they didn't anticipate was that one of PD's quartzes - Rose - would kill Pink Diamond and lead a rebellion. Rose establishes the Crystal Gems, and they fight in a thousand-year war against Homeworld over the Eath. Eventually, the Diamonds abandon their attempts at colonizing the Earth, but before they left, they did...something that involved a white flash and music (it's still unclear what they did, but the effects are similar to that of a fantastic nuke). Rose is able to save the remaining Crystal Gems with her shield, but a majority of the gems were corrupted by whatever Homeworld did to them (corruption basically meaning a painful process in which a Gem morphs into a mindless monster). Thousands of years later, Yellow Diamond checks back on Earth to see if the Cluster was to emerge. The Cluster is basically a giant forced fusion of gem shards (that is also potentially made of fallen Crystal Gems) that will rip apart the Earth upon emergence. Think of a chick hatching from an egg, and that's your basic idea. Yellow Diamond might resent the Earth because of bitterness towards the rebellion, but she might also be deeply affected by Pink Diamond's death.
