The Hunger Games is a sadistic annual event led by the Capitol in which 24 tributes from 12 districts, 1 male and 1 female, fight to the death until one survives.

Half of the tributes normally die on the first day in The Cornucopia bloodbath.

History
+

Seventy-five years before the 74th Hunger Games, all thirteen districts of Panem revolted against the Capitol. However, when District 13, the leader of the uprising, was completely destroyed, the rest of districts simply give up.

+

+

As a revenge, the Captiol created the Hunger Games. In every year since the rebellion, 24 children from all districts are forced to fight and kill each other in the arena, with people watching them by hidden cameras.

Process of the Hunger Game
+

Every year, there is a big reaping ceremony in all districts. It takes place on the square where two big glass balls are placed, one for boys and one for girls. It contains every child's who is between the ages of 12 and 18, name on pieces of papers. Some names are on more pieces, as it is possible to change them for more food. The district's representative then picks out one piece of paper from every ball. The tributes whose names are chosen are then entered into the Hunger Games, unless someone doesn't replace them voluntarily. It commonly happens only in the "Career Districts" (1, 2 and 4) where children have been training their whole lives to participate in the Games and win them.

+

+

Two children, girl and boy, then travel to the Capitol along with their mentors - the previous victors of the Games, who teaches and takes care of them. In the Capitol, there is a big ceremony where all 24 tributes compete each other to be the most popular and look the most beautiful. It can help them to find sponsors who will then send them food, medicines and other necessary things to the arena.

+

+

Next three days, all tributes train together in the Training Center and learn how to use various weapons and camouflage themselves. All the time, they are watched by the Gamemakers. On the fourth day, all tributes separately show the Gamemakers what they are capable of, choosing a particular skill they excel at. They are then scored from 1 to 12, 1 being very low and 12 being almost impossible to achieve.

+

+

On the first day of the Hunger Games, all tributes are launched around around the Cornucopia on pedestals, which is in the center of the vast arena. There are mines under the tribute plates, which are deactivated after the minute of standing for the tributes. After that, all tributes run to the Cornucopia where are all backpacks with weapons and other things to survive. Every tribute try to get the best backpack and it is also when many of them are killed.

During the Hunger Games, tributes attempt to find their opponents and kill them, as only one can be a victor. They sometimes alliance with each other, especially the Career Tributes, but only temporarily. Tributes sometimes get presents from their sponsors - wealthy viewers of the Capitol or of districts. The presents can contain anything a tribute needs: food, medicine or weapon. However, it isn't cheap. The arena is controlled by the Gamemakers all the time. To have more fun, they sometimes add disasters to the arena, like forest fire or Muttations. Everything what happens in the arena is still recorded by hidden cameras and previewed on TV even to the districts with no usual electricity.

+

+

Once one tribute dies, there is a cannon sound heard in the arena. In every evening, pictures of tributes who died that day are shown in the sky. When there is only one tribute alive, he or she becomes a victor. Since then, the survived tribute is celebrated as a hero and can live in the Victors' Village - a wealthy neighborhood in every district. Victors also don't have to participate in the next Games anymore.

+

+

Six months after the Hunger Games, the current victor travels though all districts and has a speech to people in every one, beginning with District 12 and ending with the Capitol.

+

Quarter Quells
+

Every twenty-five years, the president of Panem selects a card from a box made during the original establishment of the Hunger Games that makes a change in the rules of the reaping. For the first Quarter Quell, each district had to choose the children who went into the arena. For the second Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes (two boys and two girls from every district) had to participate the Games For the third Quarter Quell, the tributes were reaped from the pool of existing victors.

+

+

More victors
+

The 74th Hunger Games had two victors, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. During the Games, the Gamemakers changed rules, so there could be two victors, if they were both from the same district. This was a great chance for Katniss and Peeta to survive. However, when they were the only survivors, the Gamemakers annulled this rule. Katniss and Peeta decided to commit a suicide, forcing the Gamemakers to let them win both.

+

+

The 75th and last Hunger Games had no victor, as it was ended untimely by District 13. However, six tributes survived this Games, so they can be considered as victors.
