They are gathered by the elderly Kagemaru to aid him in his quest to get back his lost youth. All seven of them are elite duelists, and everyone of them has a Shadow Charm. Shadow Charms are items with supernatural powers of unknown origin. A long time ago, Kagemaur was forced to seal away the three Sacred Beasts. He locked them behind the spirit gates underneath Duel Academy. The only way to open the spirit gates is with all seven keys, which he gave to Chancellor Sheppard. Sheppard gave the keys to the seven best duelists of the Academy, knowing that they would only open the spirit gate when the keys would be won in a fair duel.
