Film Screening “Lighter than Orange – The Legacy of Dioxin in Vietnam”

Thu 18 Jun 2015, 7.30 pm

Hanoi Cinematheque

22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội

Friends of Vietnam Heritage (FVH) would like to present to its members the Vietnam premier showing of the documentary: “Lighter than Orange – The legacy of Dioxin in Vietnam”.

This documentary reveals a political failure through individual biographies. It depicts the fates of a few of the 4 million Vietnamese veterans who have been victims of Agent Orange, a dioxin-based herbicide which was used to clear foliage from trees.

These veterans speak about their exposure to the dioxin-based herbicide during the war and their lives afterwards. They each brought home changes in their DNA from exposure to the herbicide which would later be shown to mutate a person’s genetic code. This change was passed down through generations and now children and grandchildren are suffering from incurable illnesses and debilitating deformity.

Ligher Than Orange was selected for screening at the KuaLa Lumpur EcoFilm Festival (Oct 2014) and the Docpoint Helsinki Documentary Film Festival (Feb 2015). It was an Offical Selection for the Socially Relevant Film Festival in New York (March 16 – 2) and came away with the Grand Prize Documentary Feature Award. It was also a Gold Award winner in the Film makers World Festival in Jakarta (March 18 – 27).

Runtime: 72 minutes Vietnamese with English subtitles.

There will be a Question and Answer session afterwards with some of the films veterans and children from the Friendship Village.

Film Screening “Y/Our Music” – Screening Program by The Onion Cellar at ASEAN Music Festival 2015

ATK

73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi

The Onion Cellar presents a screening of Y/OUR MUSIC (official Vietnam premiere)

Part of SOUNDS BY SOUTHEAST 1 @ ASEAN Music Festival 2015

Y/OUR MUSIC (82 min / Thailand / 2014)

Directed by David Reeve & Waraluck Hiransrettawat Every

Y/OUR MUSIC immerses itself in the world of Thai musical expressions, from traditional music to labor songs and classical pop to urban indie music, spanning different locales and generations.

As nine musicians display their musical expression, the rural or urban environments that influenced their sound are also explored. The hands that play traditional instruments amid the red dust clouds, the work songs being hummed in front of grains awaiting harvest, and the indie music born out of concrete basements – all create a melodious ecosystem, captured in a sensory journey from the noisy polluted streets of Bangkok to the calm, arid fields of Isan (the country’s northeastern region bordering Laos and Cambodia).

While inhabiting different worlds, the musicians are linked by the same passion to bring their artistic aspirations to the fore and survive outside the pop mainstream.

Y/OUR MUSIC is part of SOUNDS BY SOUTHEAST (SXSE) 1

Film Screening “Yangon Calling” – Screening Program by The Onion Cellar at ASEAN Music Festival 2015

Wed 17 Jun 2015, 8 pm

ATK

73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi

The Onion Cellar presents a screening of YANGON CALLING – PUNK IN MYANMAR (official Vietnam premiere).

Part of SOUNDS BY SOUTHEAST 1 @ ASEAN Music Festival 2015

YANGON CALLING (61 min / Myanmar/Germany / 2013)

Directed by Alexander Dluzak and Carsten Piefke

In the 90’s, sailors brought the first punk rock cassettes into Myanmar. Since then a scene with several hundred followers has emerged in Yangon.

The film YANGON CALLING introduces the main protagonists of the punk rock scene and shows their life in Myanmar’s underground. During six weeks, the filmmakers Alexander Dluzak and Carsten Piefke filmed secretly and without authorization in Yangon, using small cameras. They accompanied the punks to their homes and met their friends and families. They went along with them to work in the tailor shop and tattoo studio, to rehearsal rooms and secret illegal concerts. They spoke with punks who had sat in jail during the military dictatorship and saw them fight their frustration with heroin.

YANGON CALLING is a film about life in an authoritarian state, about personal tragedy and the struggle for freedom in a country where punk is still true rebellion.

YANGON CALLING – PUNK IN MYANMAR is part of SOUNDS BY SOUTHEAST (SXSE) 1

Documentary Screening “Manufactured Landscape” by Edward Burtynsky and Jennifer Baichwal

Sun 14 Jun 2015, 6 – 8 pm

Nha San Collective

2nd floor, 24 Ly Quoc Su, Hanoi

This June, Nha San Collective together with Doclab, would like to introduce to you a documentary film “Manufactured Landscape” by Jennifer Baichwal and Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky – who uses large format field camera (super-16mm film) to capture ecological disasters caused by man.

Footage from “Manufactured Landscape” was mainly shot in China, where the economy is rising strongly and rapidly accompanied by the demand for energy, exploiting, deforestation and waste.

Three Gorges Dam – the largest dam and artificial lake ever created by man. To create this construction, they has uprooted more than one million people and flooded 13 cities. An amount of compensation was given to the people for the deconstruction of their own place where they were living in.

Shanghai – the world’s fastest growing city where the skyscrapers are springing up to replace the old neighborhoods and small houses.

Chinese leaders have a powerful visualization of a society where 70% is urban and 30% is rural. To do this, one needs a large amount of oil and coal to provide energy. But after all this, where is China headed? What would the environment and even this planet become?

Through Edward Burtynsky’s lens, the metaphorical images about the dilemma of modern life, the pursuit of progress, a dialogue between gravity (an enchanting beauty) and thrust (the horror) created an uncomfortable contradiction.

We act accordingly to our wishes – “a better life” but we also realize that the world is devastated and heartbroken by our success. We exploit and depend on nature to provide the materials produced for consumption – and we are also interested in the health of the planet.

“Manufactured Landscape” could be considered as a reflection of the generation we’re living in.

Rural Operetta Performance “The Young ladies Sings Rural Operetta”

Sat 13 Jun 2015, 8 pm

L’Espace

24 Tràng Tiền, Hà Nội

Hát chèo is a form of Vietnamese light opera, born in the 10th century and developed in the rural areas of the Red River’s delta. With a woman as the main character, this operetta focuses on the symbolic gesture that is characteristic of the Asian theatre, with songs, lullabies and rhythms where lyrism and pamphlet are combined.

In counterpoint to this special lyric art, L’Espace proposes an exhibition of pictures made for the piece Vân Dại (Vân the Mad) on rice paper, by painter Ly Truc Son, who also drew the scenery of this light opera.

European – Vietnamese Documentary Film Festival 2015

Hanoi: 10 – 19 Jun 2015

National Studio for Documentary and Scientific Film

HCMC: 11 – 20 Jun 2015

Hoa Sen University

EUNIC and the National Studio for Documentary and Science Films once again invite audiences to immerse themselves in visual worlds of experience from a variety of cultures at the 7th European-Vietnamese Documentary Film Festival.

A stimulating dialogue between European and Vietnamese documentaries will be created by the format of the festival. Each evening a film from Vietnam will be followed by a film from Denmark, Germany, France, Israel, Austria, Poland, Switzerland, Spain or Sweden.

In addition, young filmmakers from various Southeast Asian countries offer a look at their reality. A special film series will screen contributions from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

The genre of the documentary has in recent years enjoyed ever increasing popularity worldwide. The open and genuine view of the world offers viewers an opportunity to gain an understanding of diverse realities and cultures through images.

The themes of the films reflect discourses in contemporary society and provide a basis for discussion and exchange. This year, for example, two European films (from Israel and Denmark) address the issue of gender and identity, each portraying the lives of two young people outside normative gender boundaries. Several of the Vietnamese contributions have won awards at festivals, and many focus, among other things, on the experiences and the horrors of the war, the end of which recently marked its 40th anniversary.

All entries will be screened from 10 – 19 June in Hanoi and from 11 – 20 June in Ho Chi Minh City. In addition, two workshops will be held: one in Hanoi with the German filmmaker Arne Birkenstock on script development and one in HCMC with the Israeli filmmaker Shirley Berkovitz.

The 7th European-Vietnamese Documentary Film Festival opens in Hanoi with the film “Lasting with the time” by Lê Hồng Chương. Based on these documents, “Lasting with the time” traces the lives of the soldiers, their fears and wishes.

This is followed by the award-winning music documentary “Sound of Heimat” by German director Arne Birkenstock, who will personally present his film. He describes in a humorous way the turbulent journey of the New Zealand saxophonist Hayden Chisholm through the German music landscape. Exhibition: 12 – 26 Jun 2015

The Exhibition Hall, 45 Trang Tien Str, Hanoi

To cover the war in Vietnam, The Associated Press gathered a group of extraordinary photojournalists in its Saigon bureau, creating one of the greatest photographic legacies of the 20th century. Forty years later, a collection of 50 gripping AP images will be on display in Vietnam to tell the human story behind the conflict.

The exhibit will open June 12 at The Exhibition Hall, 45 Trang Tien St., Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi. It will feature images drawn from AP’s much-acclaimed photo history, “Vietnam: The Real War.” From Malcolm Browne’s horrific photograph of an elderly Buddhist monk, voluntarily set ablaze during a protest against the South Vietnamese government, to Nick Ut’s famous picture of a 9-year-old girl running scorched and naked from a napalm attack, the selected images capture the drama and tragedy of people caught in war. Other AP photographers represented in the exhibit include Horst Faas and Henri Huet.

A few days before the exhibit opens, Ut will revisit the site near Trang Bang, outside of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), where he took his iconic photo on June 8, 1972. In addition, Ut will chronicle his journey back via AP Images’ Instagram account, providing an intimate view of what he saw and felt in those moments and his perspective more than 40 years later. AP won six Pulitzer Prizes for its coverage in Vietnam, four of them for photography, including Ut’s award in 1973.

The exhibit will run through June 26, 2015. Admission is free. Other exhibits drawn from “Vietnam: The Real War” were previously presented at the Steven Kasher Gallery in New York and the headquarters of the Guardian in London.
