So you want to express yourself, but you never took an art class.  Never fear!  There are plenty of creative activities that are fun, satisfying, and low-pressure.

Journaling

Take a few minutes each day to write down your thoughts. Make sure not to judge your writing; no one has to read it. You’ll be amazed at how relieved you’ll feel after putting some of your thoughts to paper.

2. Collaging

All you need is some cardboard, scissors, glue/Mod Podge, and magazines.  Start simple by filling in the canvas with some interesting clippings.  As you keep going, the collage will take on a life of its own!

3. Dancing

Interpretive dance is an increasingly popular form of therapy and stress management.  Not to mention, it’s one of the best forms of exercise.  So break out the spandex and dance your heart out, no matter what the haters say.

4. Cosmetics

Believe it or not, your body is a canvas!  Make-up artists are slaying in YouTube tutorials, cosplay events, and pretty soon, at Halloween parties.  Whether you want to contour your face to look like Drake, or make sure your zombie face is on-fleek, now’s the perfect time to brush up on your creative make-up game.

5. DIY Crafts

Look, I know some of these projects get a little crazy, but you can start simple.  Just hot glue things to other things, like bottle caps to a picture frame.  Cut a cabbage in half, dip it in ink, and you have a stamp for custom stationary! Or just get some painters tape and spray paint to make a cool design on a flower pot.  Don’t get discouraged by some people who have way too much time on their hands.

6. Gardening

Gardening is not only great for getting exercise and fresh air, but it also requires a lot of creative thought.  Some of the coolest gardens are cunningly made from recyclable materials, like car tires and broken furniture.  Also, you can decide which plants match your personality, all while helping the environment!

7. Cooking/Baking

Decorate cupcakes with superhero frosting! Grab some colorful fruits and veggies to make a rainbow salad! But whatever you do, never add Chemical X to Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice, or else you’ll accidentally create three sadistic little girls with deadly superpowers.

8. Wood Burnin’!

This is one of the best hobbies for people who are always struggling to buy last-minute gifts for their family.  It’s also very relaxing and therapeutic.  Just be careful with the burner, okay?

9. Sidewalk Chalk

Unleash your inner child with sidewalk chalk!  Draw out a giant board game, a race track for toy cars, or boundaries for a game of four-square! If it looks bad, someone will just assume a kid did it.

10. Jewelry Making

Jewelry making is another great hobby for when you don’t have enough money to buy all 434 of your cousins a gift. You can start simple by braiding a pendant into twine to make a necklace.  Also, you can use a cool stone you find in a meaningful place, to give your jewelry sentimental value.

So if you’re like me and can’t draw a pretty picture to save your life, hopefully some of these suggestions help.  But most importantly, the best way to embrace your creativity is to let go of self-doubt.  However your art turns out, all that matters is that you did something fun!
