After a three year hiatus, Danny Brown releases the date, cover art, and track list for his upcoming album ‘Atrocity Exhibition.’
What is a Sample?
A sample is a piece of something, and in music (especially rap) it is a very prevalent way of creating a beat. The producer (the artist behind the beat) takes a part of a song and reworks it to get it to sound how they want it. To avoid plagiarism and to support the original artist, the producer has to pay the original artist. In Danny Brown’s case, he paid $70,000 for the samples on his upcoming album.
Where’s He Been?
Danny Brown has been touring the world since the release of his last album ‘Old’. This album consisted more of what he calls “performance songs,” whereas his next LP is what he calls “just my sound.” He’s headlined major festivals in the past few years and has become a household name, so he now has the ability to make the music that he really wants to make.
Why spend so much money on samples?
He states that this album is the result of a long time in the studio with sample based hip-hop that cost $70,000 to clear when all was said and done. “A lot of people cheap. And that’s why their music sounds cheap,” says Brown. “I wanna make timeless stuff, so you’re gonna have to spend a couple dollars. You could have a Rolex or you can have a Swatch.”
What is an Atrocity Exhibition?
The album title is based on a song of the same name from the ’80s by the band Joy Division. Brown states “I just relate to that song a lot. That song, [Ian Curtis is] pretty much talking about how he feels like he’s part of a freak show almost. People just wanna come see him and they just wanna see him be a certain type of way.”
With his trademark teeth and persona, Brown feels pressured to be a certain type of way, and this album is going to show who he really is. The album is due 9/30/2016.
