This spring break, my roommates and I dug out the swimsuits and left snowy State College behind for sunny Cancun, Mexico. For our very last spring break, we wanted to check “wild college trip” off our bucket list. And this trip certainly did not fall short. Here’s the good, the bad, and the ugly of Spring Break in Cancun.

The Good:

The weather. Not having to bundle up with 50 layers or cry every time the wind whipped while going to class was glorious.  A steady 80 degrees and sunny was the average weather all week, resulting in a great tan. The resort was also beautiful. We stayed at Grand Oasis Cancun, one of the biggest in town, located right on the beach with the longest swimming pool in Latin America (congrats?). There were a ton of palm trees covering the space and even peacocks roaming around—admittedly not my favorite part. It was also super convenient to not have to carry a wallet and money around all the time since it was all inclusive. You want guacamole and chips? Free. Three margaritas? Free. A 2-day hangover from all this ‘inclusive’ alcohol? Free.

The Bad:

However, ‘all inclusive’ only took us so far. Turns out our package only allowed us into half the bars and restaurants on the resort. We also had to pay a $30 upfront fee upon arrival, Wi-Fi cost money by the hour, there was an additional daily fee if we wanted to use the safe in our room to store passports and ids, and also extra charge to use the damn mini bar in the room. Additionally, factor in a tip for waiters, $70 covers for downtown Cancun bars, and even more money if we wanted to go on excursions. ‘All inclusive’ should really be called ‘half included’.

The Ugly:

Before going on the trip, we expected it to be pretty ratchet. Our resort was known to be the biggest party spot in the entire city of Cancun. However, we didn’t expect how predatory and exhausting a damn vacation would be. I want to say that 98% of the people vacationing at the resort last week were college students. All looking for a good time and to make awful decisions for 5 days. This meant that a simple dinner turned into getting hit on every 10 minutes by random drunk guys. Sure, at first it was flattering, then by the 10th pick up line, I was over trying to make small talk with a dude whose intentions were so damn obvious. In addition, a week-long vacation full of partying sounds great in theory, but in reality, 120 hours of nonstop drinking, not eating healthy, no water and barely any sleep puts a huge toll on your body and mind. By day four, we heard grown men asking for their mommies.

In short, Cancun was fun, but it was also hard. Really glad we went, but also equally as glad it was a one-and-done kind of deal.
