A few years back in 2013, we got introduced to one the most mesmerizing new school projects to ever come out of Chicago. Listeners raved about ‘Innanetape’, trying to piece together the idea that an artist so young could be so musically seasoned. Vic Mensa paraded all of our radars and became an iconic figure in the new school Chi-town movement alongside his ace Chance the Rapper. From such a suggesting mixtape, we began to anticipate what was going to follow but thing is that it’s now 2016 and well, we’re still waiting. Let me rewind though.

After the release of ‘Innanetape’, he toured two years straight with Wale and J. Cole in 2013, and then in Europe with Danny Brown in 2014. Touring is heavy but with that much time, as listeners we tentatively expect for something to drop. The wait continued but we were indeed pleased to hear that Vic Mensa was named to the XXL Freshman Class of 2014 Following we assumed that he had to be working on some magic, because the only thing we heard him on was a feature to Asher Roth’s “Fast Life” in late April. A month later Vic finally came through, dropping an urban contemporary, euro style single called “Down On My Luck” and a harder track called “I Feel That”. It wasn’t exactly relative to what we expected but they were something to note.

The word then spread that Vic was working on his debut album, ‘Traffic’. Teaming up with Chicago legend Kanye West, he got two special collaborations in “U Mad”  and “Wolves”, also featuring Sia. After signing to Jay Z’s Roc Nation, our anticipations gradually got higher and higher, noting the resources and progress he was making in the industry. This SAVEMONEY affiliate then hit us with singles in every month of the summer, including a cover to Future’s “Codeine Crazy” and in the fall, was among many of the headliners performing at Made in America. The last we heard from Vic other than that was his writing credits in Kanye West’s “All Day” and his video release for the single “No Chill”, teaming up with Skrillex and Jahlil Beats.

His timeline is quite impressive but our questions still remains, where is Vic Mensa? We want the album and although we are receiving little pieces to his artistry, it isn’t enough to satisfy our hopes. Now we can conclude that the album will be one for the books, especially since he’s under the wings of two hip-hop moguls in Jay Z and Kanye West and the fact that it’s been 3 years since he dropped a project. Although it’s been a couple of years, maybe I’m over thinking this. So in early 2016, I guess we’ll just have to continue doing what we’ve been, waiting…
