The results for KCSE 2016 candidates is out and as usual various institutions have lined up scholarships for students who scored A plain, A-,B+ and B plain. If you belong to this group, here are the kind of scholarships you should expect.

UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI SCHOLARSHIPS

University of Nairobi, being the top university in Kenya, offers competitive scholarships for undergraduate students.

Among the scholarships offered by University of Nairobi include:

The Rockefeller Foundation scholarships

EUROPEAN UNION BURSARY

This is open to final year students in secondary schools to study the following professional courses at Strathmore University in the coming year:

Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Diploma in Business Management

Diploma in Business Information Technology

Two application forms are sent to each of the top 100 secondary schools in the KSCE ranking. The school selects two top students based on their mock examination performance.

To qualify for the bursary applicants should:

Be capable of achieving a mean grade of B+, as well as a B+ in English and a B+ in Mathematics in the KCSE examinations.

Be bright and needy

Have full accommodation fees

Raise 10% tuition fees as the bursary covers 90%

Pay full KASNEB registration and examinations fees for CPA applicants as this is not included in the scholarship

EAST AFRICAN BREWERIES LIMITED FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship scheme was started in April 2001 by the EABL Foundation under the Skills for Life programme to invest  in bright and needy students by offering full scholarships. The scholarship scheme is open to students who wish to pursue the following degree courses offered at Strathmore University:

Bachelor of Commerce  – 3 students per year

Bachelor of Business Information Technology – 3 students per year

MCKINNEY ROGERS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship scheme is an initiative of the McKinney Rogers Foundation, a global consulting firm to invest  in bright and needy students by offering full scholarships. The scholarship scheme is open to students who wish to pursue the following degree courses offered at Strathmore University:

Bachelor of Commerce  – 1 student  per year

Bachelor of Business Information Technology – 1 student  per year

Who can apply for EABL and McKinney Rogers Foundation Scholarships.

Selection for EABL and MRF scholarships is made on the basis of outstanding academic results and financial need.

Eligibility Criteria

The scholarship is open to Kenyan students who sat for KCSE in the year predecing the the year of intake and attained a minimum grade of A- .

MATHEMATICS CONTEST SCHOLARSHIPS

Strathmore University awards the best form four boy and girl in the country’s top mathematics contests. These top students are awarded a tuition fees scholarship to pursue Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Association of Chartered Certified Accountant (ACCA) or Diploma in Business Information Technology (DBIT).

To qualify for the scholarship applicants should:

Be capable of achieving a mean grade of B+, as well as a B+ in English and a B+ in Mathematics in the KCSE examinations.

Have full accommodation fees

Pay full registration and examination fees for CPA/ACCA applicants, as the scholarship caters for tuition fees only.

Upon selection and admission, the successful candidate will be expected to:-

Be an SU ambassador

Adhere to the expected SU academic and discipline standards.

Be ranked in quarter 1 or 2 to remain eligible

Demonstrate leadership qualities, spirit of service and concern for others

Be willing to be actively involved in university events and community service

SPORTS SCHOLARSHIPS

Since 2006 Strathmore University has been awarding scholarships to candidates who have demonstrated talent in these sports.

Attain a minimum grade  B in the KCSE examinations

REBATES

Sports

Strathmore University awards fee rebates to top non-scholarship students who excel in sports annually. Players must have been exemplary on and off the field with an equally impressive disciplinary record.

Family

This rebate is awarded to parents/guardians with 2 or more students undertaking a degree course at the University.  The rebate is awarded to the student who performed better in the previous academic year. Application for the Family Rebate is done annually by filling in a Family Fee Benefit Form and attaching copies of birth certificates and academic transcripts and submitting them to the Financial Aid Office.
Bursaries

These are grants based on need and outstanding academic ability and are normally awarded to students who meet additional criteria that may be set by the donor.

I&M BANK SCHOLARSHIP

The I&M Bank as part of their corporate social responsibility awards scholarship to bright and needy students pursue courses at Strathmore University.

Eligibility Criteria

Strathmore University offers partial student loans to enable bright and needy students pursue their education.

Strathmore University Student Loan

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for a Strathmore University Student Loan, a student must fill in an application form and submit it with the following.

Copy of School Leaving Certificate

SU Loan Terms and Conditions

The loan covers between 50-90% of tuition fees.

Loan repayment period is based on the normal course duration e.g. for a 4 year course, the loan period will be 10 years.

Year 1- 4: the student is pursuing his/her degree at the University. During this period the loan attracts 0% interest rate.

Year 5: the student is given one year after graduating from university to look for a job. The loan will still be at 0% interest rate.

Year 6 -10 and regardless of whether the student has graduated/completed studies, the loan starts attracting an interest rate of 4% on reducing balance per annum. Loan repayment starts from year six.

Early repayments are encouraged before year six.

Students awarded the loan are required to register with the University’s nominated Credit Reference Bureau (CRB), Higher Education Loan Board (HELB) or any other party contracted by the University.

KIVA LOANS AT STRATHMORE UNIVERSITY

Strathmore University has partnered with KIVA, to offer a unique student loan which enables students to obtain tuition fees and laptop loans. KIVA is an online platform that connects field partners to social investors. Strathmore University is KIVA’s first non-traditional partner specializing in student loans.

The tuition and laptop loans are available to undergraduate degree students in the full-time programme. To be eligible, a student must attend a Kiva Loan information session to understand the loan requirements and application process.

Facts about KIVA loans

Full tuition Loans

This is a long-term 10 year loan that includes a grace period of up to five years.  At the end of the grace period, repayments become due on a monthly basis.  The borrower is charged an interest rate of 0% during the grace period of the loan, and 4% for the remainder of the loan term. The application process includes an interview with the student, parent/guardian as well as a home visit.

KIVA loan applicants must meet the following criteria:

A minimum of a B+ from national and top provincial schools.

A minimum grade of B from District schools from Nairobi Province central province, Nyanza province, Coast Province, Western province, Eastern Province.

A minimum grade of B- from North eastern province, and specific districts to be listed in North rift, Coast and Eastern Province.

Level of neediness

Upon selection and admission, the successful candidate will be expected to:-

Adhere to the expected SU academic and discipline standards.

Maintain an average of 60%  and above to remain eligible

Demonstrate leadership qualities, spirit of service and concern for others

Be willing to be actively involved in university events and community service.

In addition, the interview panel will look at other abilities that the student may have.

Partial Tuition Loans

These are shorter loans available to continuing students in their 2nd and 3rd year of study facing cash-flow constraints.Fourth year students may apply 12 months before the end of their degree course and must be referred by their faculty/school and mentor.  Repayments are due monthly, and the borrower is charged an interest of 4% per annum. The borrower starts making repayments one month after disbursement, in addition, two-thirds of the loan must be paid before the student sits for their final exam. Laptop Loans

These are available to 2nd and 3rd year students.   Fourth year students may apply 12 months before the end of their degree and must be referred by their faculty and mentor. Currently KIVA Loans are not available for Masters Degree and Evening Course students.

CHINESE SCHOLARSHIPS

The Chinese government offers over 200 scholarships for students who excel in KCSE.These scholarships cater for upkeep, tuition and other miscellaneous expenses.

ICPAK SCHOLARSHIPS

These are scholarships which are issued to individuals who are interested in studying business courses at local universities. They are issued to KCSE students who score above B+.
