ONE Pro Cycling announce that Phil West will be joining the team in the role of Sports Director

News – Phil West Joins One Pro Cycling

A former rider on the Great Britain team, Phil brings with him over twenty years of experience in cycling both on and off the bike. Working alongside Matt Winston and Jimmy McCallum, Phil will play a key role in ONE Pro Cycling’s preparation for 2016.

West started off his career with the National Governing Body working as a talent coach identifying new non-cycling talent and integrating them into the sport. Lizzie Armitstead is the most prominent athlete that Phil worked with in that role. After discovering her during school testing in West Yorkshire Phil went on to coach Armitstead until she moved onto the Great Britain Cycling Team Junior Development Programme. Since then he’s continued to work closely with Lizzie in an advisory and mentoring role, helping her formulate race strategy and her approach to events psychologically.

Lizzie Armitstead commented, ‘I’m really happy to see Phil in his new role with ONE Pro Cycling. Phil sees the best in everyone and in every situation. Being around somebody so positive especially in a cycling environment always leads to success. I have no doubts that the riders will excel both on and off the bike under his guidance’.

Working predominantly as a coach, West also fulfilled a team manager role for the Great Britain Cycling Team U23 Academy, Women and Junior programs across a number of international road and track events. While in 2010 he worked with John Herety as assistant Sports Director for Continental team Rapha Condor Sharp.

“After 13 years with British Cycling I felt it was time for a new challenge. The opportunity to join ONE Pro Cycling as a Sports Director came at the perfect time and was exactly the exciting new challenge I was looking for. It’s great to be on board as they make the step up to Pro Conti level and I’m really looking forward working with some likeminded individuals on this exciting project and being back in action at bike races again.” said West.

Head Sports Director Matt Winston said, “I’m really excited to welcome Phil to the management team at ONE Pro Cycling. Having worked together as coaching colleagues for a number of years on the Great Britain Cycling Team, liaising with him in his role in the events department and becoming good friends on a personal level, I know his knowledge of the sport and enthusiasm is second to none.”

Phil completes the dynamic group of performance staff carefully chosen to work with the squad in 2016. West will join ONE Pro Cycling at their first training camp in December where he’ll work closely with the riders and finalise the finer details of the race program for the upcoming season.
