Many of the world’s top cyclists racing the RideLondon Classic this weekend, led by 2012 Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins and 2012 World Champion Philippe Gilbert, for the second edition of the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic.
Wiggins and Gilbert join a list that includes Belkin Pro Cycling duo Laurens ten Dam and Steven Kruijswijk, 19th and 15th respectively in this year’s Tour de France, plus five medallists from the Commonwealth Games – Luke Davidson, Tom Scully (both gold), Shane Archbold (gold and bronze), Scott Thwaites and Aaron Gate (both bronze).
The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic gets underway from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park at 13:00 on Sunday, with live coverage on British Eurosport from 13:45 and 14:00 on BBC1.
Mark Renshaw, who raced the recent Commonwealth Games road race in Glasgow, will lead the Omega Pharma-Quick-Step team in Mark Cavendish’s absence and believes he’s in great shape to challenge for victory. “I recovered well after the Tour de France, so I’m in good condition,” he said. “I rode the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last weekend, but had a flat tyre in the finale, which stopped me going with the break”.
“In general, though, my condition is good. The team’s line-up for Prudential RideLondon is very strong. Even without Mark Cavendish, who can’t be here because of injury, I think we can do well”.
“It’s my first time at the event, but after the scenes in the UK for the Grand Depart I think we can expect big crowds again, and for us it’s always good to ride in front of big crowds. It’ll be a big spectacle, that’s for sure. London is a city that loves bikes and loves cycling so we’re looking forward to racing.”
If, as anticipated, the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic does come down to a bunch sprint on The Mall, then Renshaw is likely to find himself pitched against 20-year-old Australian compatriot Caleb Ewan.
Ewan’s Orica GreenEDGE manager Matt White believes his team can do well whether the race comes down to a sprint or a breakaway. “We have Caleb coming off the Commonwealth Games and he’s a quick finisher,” said White. “This race goes either one of two ways: there could be a breakaway that goes away in the middle of the race and sticks, or it’ll return to a bunch sprint, which was the case in the previous edition”.
“We will have both options covered and potentially put riders in the break in the tougher sections of the course or otherwise we will be happy for it to come back and we will try to set Caleb up for the sprint”.
“The objective for us is to win,” added White. “It’s a big race. It has a big live television audience and there is a huge ride that has around 24,000 people finishing at the same place as the race so there are big crowds.”
The inaugural edition of the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic in August 2013 came down to a bunch sprint, with Frenchman Arnaud Demare winning ahead of Sacha Modolo and Yannick Martinez.
In 2013, Team Giant-Shimano were one of the teams animating the race, with their rider Ramon Sinkeldam winning both the Sprints and King of the Mountains prizes. Twelve months on, coach Marc Reef is looking for a similar performance.
“We will go into the race in London with an open chance for all the riders to go on the offensive and get into the break. Then, if the race comes down to a sprint like it did last year, the team will look to support Jonas [Ahlstrand] and get him in the best possible position”.
“It will be a good opportunity for some of the team to try and get up the road and to learn from the experience. It will also be the first race for our stagiaire, Steven [Lammertink] with the team. The focus for him will be to integrate with the team and to get involved.”
Fellow Dutchman Frans Maassen, sports director for the Belkin Pro Cycling team, is also looking for his riders to make an impact with a squad that includes both ten Dam and Kruijswijk, plus strong rouleurs Paul Martens and Stef Clement.
“We’ll be racing a really beautiful course,” said Maassen. “I expect a bunch sprint, but for us that’s not what we necessarily want. If other teams support us in the hill zone we can maybe force something. We have the riders to do so.”
