STAGE BY STAGE

Stage 1 – Wednesday 7 May – Oundle to Northampton – 92.4km

Grand Depart is in the picturesque town of Oundle, which will have a street festival the day before the event, with the first stage finishing right in the centre of the county town of Northampton. The stage has two intermediate sprints at Rushton and Hunsbury and two Queen of the Mountains (QoM) points at Harrington and Spratton.

Stage 2 – Thursday 8 May – Hinckley to Bedford – 118.5km

The second stage starts in Hinckley, Leicestershire and finishes on the river embankment of historic Bedford – a town which has produced so many female Olympic legends and is regarded as the home of women’s racing in Great Britain. It has two intermediate sprints at Lutterworth and Turvey, while the Queen of the Mountains points are at Kilworth and Naseby.

Stage 3 – Friday 9 May – Felixstowe to Clacton-on-Sea – 90.5km

Stage Three takes us from the port of Felixstowe which has such a strong affinity with the Netherlands and passes through the counties of Suffolk and Essex to finish in Clacton, which is incredibly excited to be hosting the stage finish. The route heads inland to pass through Ipswich city centre before making its way back to the coast for the finish at the seaside resort of Clacton-on-Sea. On the way there are two sprints at Little Bealings and Thorpe le Soken and two QoMs at Freston and Holbrook.

Stage 4 – Saturday 10 May – Cheshunt to Welwyn Garden City – 87.8km

The penultimate stage starts in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, the home town of two of the races participants, Laura and Emma Trott, where a sports centre will be named in Laura’s honour, and finishes in Welwyn Garden City, a town which has produced many top cyclists and has a wonderful cycling youth development programme. Two sprints punctuate the route at Baldock and Codicote, with the day’s QoMs are at Hertford and Digswell Hill.

Stage 5 – Sunday 11 May – Harwich to Bury St. Edmunds – 108.3km

Finally the last stage starts in Harwich where our athletes will be joined by several thousand cyclists enjoying a mass participation cycle ride and we see the Grand Arrivée right outside the cathedral in the beautiful market town of Bury St Edmunds which has hosted The Tour of Britain in the recent past. The final two sprints are a Mistley and Long Melford while the last chance to grab QoM points comes at Long Melford and Brettenham.

The organisers Sweetspot

SweetSpot has been organising The Tour of Britain for ten years now and from modest and challenging beginnings, they have grown that race to a “Hors Categorie” status on the men’s international calendar. Their aim now is to replicate everything that they do on the men’s Tour of Britain and create a wonderful new event on the elite women’s global calendar:

• Daily one-hour TV coverage on free-to-air terrestrial national TV. In addition, the race will be televised in other countries across the world, which we hope will help teams, riders and events attract more

long-term sponsors to the sport

• The race will boast nearly seventy motorcycle escorts, professional podium presentations at both start and finish, excellent hotels specifically focussed on the needs of the teams and athletes and a prize list of 30,000 Euros.

The riders

It is the best of the best in Britain with Marianne Vos, Lizzie Armitstead, Lucy Garner and so many more world stars. The rider list will be revised over the following days as teams confirm their final line-ups for the first ever Friends Life Women’s Tour. The final start list will be confirmed and distributed late afternoon on Tuesday 6th May following the Team Manager’s meeting, although organisers SweetSpot expect minimal changes to the provisional list.
