The Gran Fondo Conwy will feature a very special time trial stage around the iconic Great Orme called ‘Storm the Orme’

Sportive: Hundreds of Riders ready to Storm the Orme

The Gran Fondo Conwy is a brand new non-competitive cycle sportive set in the heart of North Wales. Taking place on Sunday 27th April 2014 and setting off from Conwy Castle, the Gran Fondo route travels around some of the best climbs, views and roads the counties of Conwy and Denbighshire have to offer. The event has already had over 300 riders sign up and is expected to attract hundreds more!

The ‘Storm the Orme’ time trial or ‘Gwibdaith Y Gogarth’ (as it will be known locally) will give riders of the Gran Fondo Conwy the opportunity to race against the clock and their fellow riders on a complete circuit of the Great Orme. Unlike any other cycle ride on the Great Orme the Gran Fondo Conwy route will give them the chance to complete the circuit in reverse! This is possible because the road on the Orme will be closed during the morning for this section of the Gran Fondo Conwy!

This time trial will be the only competitive stage of the Gran Fondo Conwy cycle sportive. The time trial stage was given its fantastic names via an email and social media competition. Event organisers, Always Aim High Events, asked their community of followers to help them name the event in both Welsh and English.

After hundreds of fantastic suggestions the company picked ‘Storm the Orme’ and ‘Gwibdaith Y Gogarth’ as the clear winners. These answers were given by Russell Pritchard and Rhys Williams respectively over Facebook. Both winners were given a free entry into the Gran Fondo Conwy along with an Always Aim High Events T-Shirt.

The Gran Fondo Conwy has a choice of 4 routes available ensuring that there is a challenge for cyclists of all abilities. The four routes are the Mawr (104 miles), Canol (70 miles), Bach (42 miles) and the Gran Fondo Teulu, which is a free family ride (approx. 4 miles) held on closed roads.

The different routes (with the exception of the Gran Fondo Teulu) take riders to a range of wonderful places, including the historical town of Denbigh, over the iconic Llanwrst Bridge and down to the glorious Llyn Brenig as well as travelling along the glorious North Wales coastline with stunning views across the Irish Sea. The Canol and Mawr routes will also take riders from Bylchau to Llanrwst following the same route that Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish et al. cycled on in 2013 as part of the gorgeous Tour of Britain route.

Event Manager, Rob Samuel, is thrilled with how popular the Gran Fondo Conwy has been already and is delighted with the names for the time trial on the Orme. He said: ”Based on the popularity of the Gran Fondo Conwy so far we are set to reach the 800 mark, which is a fantastic achievement for a brand new event.

The time trial section is going to be brilliant and we are delighted with the names! The Gran Fondo Conwy routes are truly beautiful and the cyclists are sure to have a great time. The ‘Storm the Orme’ time trial gives the event a competitive element but there is no pressure for people to go full pelt if they don’t want to – they can just sit back and enjoy the incredible views over the Irish Sea!”

Entries to this sportive are selling fast. So if you want to take part then enter now through the Gran Fondo Conwy website.
