Jake Hales of IG Sigma Sport leads Milton Keynes Cycling Association/Corley Cycles 2 Day after two stages

Milton Keynes Cycling Association/Corley Cycles Two Day Road Race – Saturday 17, Sunday 18 August

With their eye firmly looking to the future, at quite short notice the Milton Keynes Cycling Association together with their long term supporter Corley Cycles organised a two day, three stage race starting at the MK Bowl on Saturday morning.

With financial support coming from the Bletchley based accountancy firm H.W.S, the racing started with a 6.6km team time trial on Saturday morning followed by a rain disrupted 60km crit that was supposed to have been held around one of the longer combinations linking the roads circulating the MK Bowl with a 130km road stage around the popular Astwood circuit closing the action on Sunday.

During the early planning stages, suggestions were made to make this a three day affair, the last home based stage race of such a length before the Tour of Britain, but in the first year the decision was taken not to take on such a challenge.

Stage 1 - 6.6km Team Time Trial

Thirteen, 5-man teams lined up for the opening time trial, 6 laps of the MK Bowl’s inner circuit and Team IG Sigma Sport, one of the more fancied outfits for overall honours, used the local knowledge of Jakes Hales and Matt Jones to the full in beating Metaltek-KOO by just one second after first team away, that of the promoting Corley Cycles had set the bench mark time.

MG Maxifuel were pushed by Metaltek into second place, the three best supported teams in the line-up taking the top honours with local boys Team Corley Cycles hanging on to their bench mark time to finish in an excellent fourth place overall despite their quintet including the youngest rider in the race, Ben Chapman.

By virtue of his leading the Sigma Sport outfit over the finishing line, Newport Pagnell’s Jake Hales took the white jersey of race leader.

1. Team IG Sigma Sport (Jake Hales, Matt Jones, Ryan Mullen. Andrew Griffiths, Will Goulbourne) – 8m 13s

2. Metaltek-KOO (Will Fox, Dexter Gardias, Ben Stockdale, Chris Bartlett, Tom Stockdale) @ 1secs

3. MG Maxifuel (Jamie Scott, Liam Stones, Will Bjergfelt, Jamie Caldwell, Tim Allen) @ 8secs

4. Team Corley Cycles @12secs

5. Pedal Heaven @ 16secs

6. Team Spirit @ 18ses

7. Twenty3c-Focus @ 23secs

8. CC Luton @ 25secs

9. MKCA @ 35secs

10. High Wycombe CC @ 37secs.

Stage 2 - 60km Circuit Race

With a strong wind blowing across the circuit, many riders were conscious of the black clouds that had been forming during the lunch break and after an opening spell of around 20 minutes racing the expected rain started to fall.

Almost immediately, on re-entering the main Bowl area, Chris Dredge (Team Spirit) was pushing just that bit too hard when leading the large group of riders that were forcing the pace of the race and as his front wheel slipped from underneath him causing him to fall, Team Corley’s Simon Wilson was the next rider onto the scene and was caught up in the the youngster’s accident.

The surface soon caused a number of other incidents and with the organisers wisely taking action, the race was quickly transferred to the Bowl’s inner circuit but run in the reverse direction of the morning’s team time trial.

As the rain kept falling then clearing, for a number of laps the race followed suit with riders attempting to break away before being pull back but as the race distance increased, many sensed that the second stage would finish in a bunch sprint, leaving the overall honours to be determined overall in Sunday’s lengthy road stage.

With their riders dominating the overall after the morning’s action, Metaltek-KOO and Sigma Sport were active in the closing laps and it was Metaltek’s Will Fox who just won the sprint from MG-Maxifuel’s guest rider Tim Allen. But with Sigma Sport’s Hales close in attendance in 7th place he retained the leader’s jersey ahead of Sunday’s decisive stage.
