Star studded line up for one of the most popular venues for town centre racing, Otley in Yorkshire on Wednesday – be there!

Thanks to the organiser Giles Pidcock

The longest days of the year can only mean one thing – the Otley Cycle Race! This is the 28th year these races have been run and the event continues to grow, both on and off the circuit.

This year (and for the next three years) I’m really pleased to be able to tell you that the event has a main sponsor. DM Keith Skoda are a Yorkshire family business who have been selling Skodas for over 30 years.

They are now the largest Skoda retailer in the UK with five Skoda sites in Yorkshire and they are huge supporters of Yorkshire Cycling providing vehicles and sponsorship to the locally based Sportscover Team. They also sponsor the DM Keith Sportive. You can find out more about their support of Yorkshire Cycling by visiting their special website www.dmkeithskodacycling.co.uk.

Also new for this year and with generous financial backing from Nuflex Muscle & Joint Gels we now have an women’s race. We’ll see some of the best female riders in the country competing for victory in this race – which will be race number six in the Jo Bruton National Women’s Road Series. Role models such Otley’s very own Olympic medal winning Lizzie Armitstead and up and coming locals like Penny Rowson, Jessie Walker and Gaby Shaw encourage women and girls to get their bikes out and start pedalling.

The Otley Cycle Races this year comprise five distinct events:

We get things under way at 6pm with the Nuflex Muscles & Joints Gels Otley Women’s GP. A new race for Otley and part of the Jo Bruton National Women’s Series. We will see some of the best female competitors in the country in action tonight.

18.55  is the Triton Construction Super Prestige Youth Race (for under 16 year olds). This is a “must win” race for these riders and because the event draws in riders from Newcastle, Manchester and Birmingham the winner is usually a very special rider indeed. Watch this race for a clue to who’s going to the Olympics in 2016!

Setting off after the U16’s (at 18.56) are the riders with the WGC Landscapes Lads and Lasses Otley Bike Race for under 14 riders. This race will run concurrently with the U16 race. WGC Landscapes has supported youth racing both in Otley and Yorkshire generally for many years. Their niche market is commercial landscape maintenance but they would also be pleased to help you remodel your garden or office grounds.

Netapp-Endura rider Russell Downing one of the stars of the show …

Next up have the Chevin Cycles Classic Race at 19.30. This race features the best local amateur racers from across Yorkshire, and beyond. This is a great race to watch as the field whittles down lap by lap.

Last (at 20.30) is the main event of the evening, of the year even. The 2013 MAS Design Consultants Otley GP. As usual this has drawn a massive field of the leading 100 riders in the UK today. Previously this race has been won by Mark Cavendish, Olympic Medallist Jonny Clay and former National Road Race Champions Jez Hunt and Russ Downing. Last year the event was won for the second year in a row by local boy Scott Thwaites who only lives down the road in Burley.

Scott was down to ride but is said to have been called up to do a race in China for Netapp-Endura so his teams hopes will fall on the shoulders of his ever popular teammate, Russell Downing. It’s a line up packed with the best road stars in the country including Team Raleigh’s Tom Scully who was the most successful rider in the Sweetspot Tour Series in May & June. He heads a strong line up from Raleigh including Yorkshire’s Graham Briggs, Aussie Richard Lang and French star Alex Blain.

Superman, aka Ian Wilkinson of UK Youth has a great record in Otley .. watch out for him flying round the circuit!

Other teams though also have their star riders entered. After dominating the Tour Series like no other team in the history of the series, UK Youth is packed with favourites such as Ian Wilkinson who has a great record in Otley. As they showed in the Tour Series, singling out riders is not easy when you have a team full of winners like Gustavsson, Opie, Bialoblocki, Barker and others.

Dean Downing is the ‘hitter’ in his team of Madison Genesis while Node4 have several riders capable of surprising including kiwis Roman Van Uden and Dan Barry. Olympic champion Ed Clancy has shown himself to be the fastest man on the island and rarely beaten and is well backed up in the men in black’s team with the likes of Kristian House and Scotland’s James McCallum.

IG Sigma Sport are also looking to have some luck after a luckless first half of 2013 and riders capable of getting on the podium include Matt Cronshaw, Peter Hawins and Pete Williams. Finally, there is a very strong GB Academy team with world class rider Simon Yates along with Owain Doull, Sam Harrison and others. They may well prove to be a handful on this tough kermesse like course.
