A: This is a Money Game, nothing else. There will be close to 25,000 empty seats, maybe more. Unless the TV cameras crop out the seating areas, Pac-12 football will take some ridicule, especially in football-mad precincts in the Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC, whose championship games all sold out. af A rash of phone scams is hitting the Cleburne County area by people pretending to represent the IRS. The callers have typically followed the same script when contacting residents by phone, which involves them attempting to convince the victim they have been audited and owe a fine to be paid immediately or face arrest. We were contacted by one local woman who told us a man contacted her by phone last week claiming to be an IRS agent. He informed her that she had been audited for the years 2008-2012 and was found to owe the IRS almost $4000. She was instructed go to her local Rite-Aid or Freds and purchase an electronic voucher in the amount she allegedly owes. The woman listened for a while and started to become suspicious after about 15-20 minutes. She instructed the man that she needed to contact the IRS in Little Rock. According to her, the man told her that if she did then he, as the IRS officer, couldn t help her and she would be faced with an arrest warrant, revocation of her drivers license, and garnishments from her checking account. When she responded that she didn t believe him, he swore at her and hung up. She was able to provide us with a phone number, which we called last Thursday. A man answered the phone only by saying IRS . The conversation then played out as follows: The Sun-Times: Is this the IRS? Man: Yes The Sun-Times: Good afternoon. This is James Jackson from The Sun-Times in Heber Springs, Arkansas. We received a phone call from a woman this morning who is concerned that she may have been targeted by a scam from this number. We wanted to follow up with this and get some verification information, if we could. Could I get your name, please? Man: Officer Michael The Sun-Times: Officer Michael? Could I also get your last name Officer Michael? Man: Austin The Sun-Times: Officer Michael Austin. So Officer Austin can you verify that you do represent the IRS? Man: Yes. Can you tell me the name of the woman that called you? The Sun-Times: We re really just looking to verify some information, so the name of who called us isn t the issue. Officer Austin, if I call our IRS office in Little Rock, will they be able to verify that you do represent them and this phone number is valid number for the IRS? Page 2 of 2 - The man then hung up the phone. We contacted the Cleburne County Sheriff s Office who informed us that they have received multiple calls about this scam. The Sun-Times would like to encourage all our readers to be wary of any callers offering prizes and claiming money is owed. There are a number of warning signs that a call may be a scam, but the most common requirement in all of these scams is that the intended victim must purchase a prepaid money card or electronic voucher . Should anyone contact you and request payment for anything in this way, you should stop all conversation and ask for information from them that you can use to verify they are legitimate. Any legal, legitimate organization can easily and will give you their contact information. If you have been targeted or believe you are a victim of this or any other scam, contact the Cleburne County Sheriff s Office at 501-362-8143 or the Heber Springs Police Department at 501-362-8291. x polo ralph lauren outlet online The price E-Z is charging is obscene, and it’s throwing in some additional random charges, like painting the vehicle, which makes the total bill $1,361. We saw it in the season opener against Arkansas, when he was 12-of-16 passing for 243 yards and two touchdowns, including completions on his first eight passes. Johnson's big arm and frame calls for a change, however, in the offense. We don't expect the zone-read option to be the fulcrum of the Tigers' success as we'll see a unit that resembles the approach Malzahn used at Tulsa and Arkansas State. The difference? Meyer http://www.tomsoutlet.us.org • Fractures ï»؟coach A rise in employment and a falling jobless rate in December capped the best year for the labor market since 1999 and reinforced the U.S. role as the global economy's standout performer. The 252,000 jobs added followed a 353,000 rise the prior month that was more than previously estimated, a Labor Department report showed on Friday. The jobless rate dropped to 5.6 percent, the lowest level since June 2008. The report wasn't all good news as earnings unexpectedly declined from a month earlier. "We have continued, solid job growth," said Michael Feroli, chief U.S. economist at JPMorgan Chase, who projected a 240,000 gain. "It shows really solid momentum in U.S. growth. There are not a lot of places in the world where we see that these days." About 3 million more Americans found work in 2014, the most in 15 years and a sign companies are optimistic U.S. demand will persist even as overseas markets struggle. The drop in workers' hourly wages means Federal Reserve policy makers are less likely to move up the timing of an interest-rate increase. "The data certainly don't point to any wage pressures," said Stephen Stanley, chief economist at Amherst Pierpont Securities in Stamford, Connecticut. "There's nothing to worry about with respect to inflation. It lowers the odds of the Fed having to move faster than they'd like." Stocks fell after a two-day rally halted the worst start to a year since 2008. The Standard Poor's 500 Index declined 0.6 percent to 2,050.44 at 12:21 p.m. in New York. The yield on the benchmark 10-year note retreated to 1.96 percent from 2.02 percent late Thursday. Job growth last month was highlighted by the biggest gain in construction employment in almost a year. Factories, health care providers and business services also kept adding workers in December. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey of 99 economists called for a 240,000 advance in payrolls. Estimates ranged from 160,000 to 305,000 after a previously reported 321,000 November increase. Revisions to prior reports added a total of 50,000 jobs to the previous two months. The unemployment rate, which is derived from a separate Labor Department survey of households, was projected to drop to 5.7 percent from 5.8 percent, according to the survey median. The jobless rate averaged 6.2 percent last year, down from 7.4 percent in 2013 and the biggest decrease since 1984. "The jobs report demonstrates that we have a very strong wind in our back in the U.S. economy," Labor Department Secretary Tom Perez said in a telephone interview. Part of the government's unfinished agenda is to "make sure the rising tide lifts all boats." More people dropped out of the labor force in December. The participation rate, which indicates the share of working-age people in the labor force, decreased to 62.7 percent, matching the lowest level since February 1978, from 62.9 percent. Page 2 of 3 - The combination of job growth and cheaper gasoline will probably help stretch workers' paychecks and sustain consumer spending. Prices at the gas pump are the lowest since 2009, according to AAA, the largest U.S. motoring organization. Average hourly earnings for all employees dropped from the prior month by 0.2 percent, the biggest since comparable records began in 2006. Earnings rose 0.2 percent in November, half as much as previously reported. They increased 1.7 percent over the 12 months ended in December, the least since October 2012. The monthly decline in pay may prove temporary because it was influenced by the mix of workers on payrolls, economists said. Big gains in hiring for the holidays, more entry-level positions and retirements of more expensive workers all probably played a role. "You've hired a lot of people in the last three or four months, and to the extent that you're bringing in a lot of new talent, this new talent is not getting paid as the more experienced talent," said John Silvia, chief economist at Wells Fargo Securities in Charlotte, North Carolina. "It's probably only temporary. I would suspect that at the beginning of this year, as we go forward, those wages will pick up." Construction companies added 48,000 jobs last month, the most since January. Factories increased payrolls by 17,000 in December. Business services took on another 52,000 workers. Alicia Courtney, 28, is seeing the labor market improvement first hand. Feeling "kind of stuck" in her old job, she said she began looking for a new one in August. FlexJobs's search services helped her land a position in mid-November as an account manager at EmoryDay, a digital marketing company. "There are certainly more jobs available out there," said Courtney, who is earning about 20 percent more now and works from home in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. "This is exactly what I wanted. I was pretty confident I'd find a new job, and it wasn't too difficult." Wage gains have lagged behind the pace of employment growth. Increased incomes, combined with the cheapest fuel costs since 2009, are needed to help lay the ground work for a pickup in the household spending that accounts for about 70 percent of the economy. The outlook is improving for earners at the lowest end of the income ladder. Voters approved ballot measures and legislatures enacted laws that allowed the minimum wage to rise in almost half of U.S. states on Jan. 1. The advances may be reflected in the wage data in the jobs report for January. Stronger employment growth underscores the U.S. economy's resilience in the face of cooling markets that stretch from Europe to China. Greenbrier Cos. is among companies that are expecting stronger domestic demand. The Lake Oswego, Oregon-based supplier of railroad equipment boosted its annual forecast after reporting a record backlog in the first quarter. Page 3 of 3 - "Macroeconomic conditions indicate strength and expansion for the U.S. economy in 2015 and beyond, with lower energy prices creating a strong impetus for auto production, consumer spending and overall growth," William Furman, chief executive officer, said in a statement on Jan. 7. Fed policy makers last month noted the improvement in the job market that's underpinning growth in the sixth year of the expansion. Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta President Dennis Lockhart said Friday's strong jobs report is no reason to speed up the timing of an interest-rate increase that he sees occurring in the middle of the year or later. "I don't see a reason yet to accelerate my assumption of when a policy move might be appropriate," Lockhart, who votes on monetary policy this year, said in a telephone interview from Atlanta. At the same time, "clearly this added to accumulated progress with very healthy numbers." e true religion jeans Permits can be suspended for major violations.
