When Urban Decay says “drop it”, I can hardly help myself – I just have to! I’m blaming it on some sort of makeup voodoo (which is a thing you know) – that or a clever marketing scheme, but yeah UD, I’m in. The Urban Decay Naked on the Run travel palette is a hot, limited edition eye, face & lip palette for on-the go gals and just so happens to have been perfectly released right around the holidays which means it makes a great gift for a friend or for yourself. (I can see that Sephora $$ off card burning a hole in your pocket there girl – yes I’m talking to you!) So why don’t we take a little closer look at the latest in the NAKED saga from Urban Decay together (I promise I will only show a little skin in the photos that follow!)
First of all I just have to gush that I think the packaging is beautiful. In fact I think it is the most beautiful thing I’ve seen from Urban Decay. Shiny rose gold edges with mesmerizing pattern on the lid that reminds me of a combination of a patterned print from the 70’s, wood inlay, a watercolor painting and ikat print all rolled into one. It is also iridescent so when you look at it from a certain angle more of the browns and golden tones show and then at another you get more of the green. Seriously. Gorgeous. ♥ Now where is a heart-eyed Emoji when I need one?!
Oh the pretty.
The size of the case is not overly large or small either. It is something I would feel comfortable traveling with because it feels sturdy but it would be a stretch trying to carry this along in my handbag, so I’d say it is the perfect gym-bag or carry-on companion size. The inside has a large mirror that fortunately stays open so you can set it on a counter and see what you are doing.
The inside is where it’s at though:
Inside the palette you’ll see five regular-size eye shadows – two are matte shades (Fix. Dare), three are shimmers (Dive, Resist, Stun). The larger eye shadow, “5050” is more of a satin finish (with micro shimmer) which is next to the blush and bronzer. All of these shades are never-before seen shades from Urban Decay! Also included is a travel size Perversion Mascara, travel size 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Stag and one NAKED Lipgloss in Sesso.
«Note the gloss, liner and mascara fit quite tightly in the case so getting your fingernail in there or tipping the case to the side so they come out is necessary.
The NAKED On the Run Palette is on par with Urban Decay’s quality products, of that I have no doubt. The eye shadows are what you would expect from the brand – the matte shades are pigmented and smooth and the shimmers – well, yes they have fallout but if we’re being honest you already know this even before personally experiencing this palette and for me to shout “The shadow is falling, the shadow is falling!” would probably make me seem like I’m re-enacting Chicken Little for you. So then, we’ve got fallout that we know about so let’s move along.
As for the eye variety in this palette I feel like the shade selection is a little lateral when it comes to the browns in the palette. While Dive is the unique one in the bunch (it reminds me of a more pink version of Virgin so it is ultra-smooth with no fallout) however, the four brown-ish shades are a little similar once on the lids, although they look a little more varied in the pan. I like that they included a large size of the highlight shade 5050. The shade is beautiful and I’m glad they made the decision to not make it overly sparkly or matte – satin is a nice touch and the hint of shimmer is flattering and nearly indistinguishable once blended out.
The bronzer and blush in the palette are solidly pigmented, I will give UD that! The bronzer shade is quite warm-toned and the blush is a very bold pink that will have no problem showing up on darker skintones – I actually over applied when first using this palette and had to go back and blend it away.
A full size NAKED Lipgloss is included in this set in the shade Sesso which appears to be a medium pink-nude but once on the lips it is quite sheer. I really like these glosses – the formula is not sticky, the scent is minty and they last long on the lips. I understand the need to make one universally flattering but I was a little disappointed it was so sheer on me. Of course since I am more of a lipstick kind of gal I think including a small version of the UD Revolution Lipstick would have been a great choice for this set!
Hooray for a 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil! I love these liners and since I haven’t purchased a fresh one in awhile I forgot how much I love them so I’m glad we’re reunited. The pigmentation of Stag is solid and is a deep cool brown/black so I think it is pretty universal for anyone to wear. I wish that a full-size one would have fit into the palette, but hey, I’ll take the small version!
Also included in this travel set is a travel-size Perversion mascara which is actually my first experience with the mascara. I have to say I love the wand – nice and fluffy and it grabs every one of my lashes! It also feels lightweight enough to not weigh down my droopy lashes which is so nice! Of all of the products in the palette I think I would purchase a full size of this in the future.
Swatches
Swatched L to R: Dive, Fix, Resist, Dare, Stun
Swatched L to R: bronzer, blush, 5050, Stag 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil, Perversion Mascara, Sesso NAKED Lipgloss
Overall I do like this set – the packaging gets high marks from me and the quality of the product inside is solid. The palette is travel friendly which is great for those on the go but in terms of replacing the products that will get used up more quickly I wish they would have been able to fit in a few full-size products. Once Perversion is gone you can’t fit a full size one in its place. The liner will also get used up quickly but I could always wait until I sharpen down a full size so it will fit inside the palette so that isn’t an issue for me. As for the gloss I can easily fit in another size of the NAKED lipgloss when this one is gone – but to be frank, when is the last time I actually used up a gloss inside of a year? Also going back to my previous comment about lipstick instead of gloss in this palette, I just tried fitting in one of my Revolution lipsticks and if they would have made the compartment a smidgen larger I could have fit it in there (bummer man!).
I like this palette and I would love to get it as a gift. I think it is a very pretty set that would be universally flattering and the packaging gives it that extra wow factor. If you are a die-hard makeup collector you might want it just for that fact, but I’m not so sure the joy factor will be universal to everyone as far as the shade selection and variety included in this palette if you already own your fair share of NAKED if you know what I mean but then again all of the eye shadows are unique to this palette…
