The opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has refuted ownership of some social media accounts making unofficial statements on its behalf and has launched four twitter handles for authentic representation of the party.
In a press release issued out Tuesday and signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Dayo Adeyeye, the party said it had equally come to its notice that “some elements” are creating twitter and Facebook accounts for some leaders of the party and hence, state that no leader of the party has any twitter of facebook accounts as the party has its media and publicity arm that takes care of disseminating pieces of information regarding the party’s activities.
It read in full:
“Refuting The Twitter Handle @SenMakarfi;
• Launch of 4 Indigenous Twitter Handles.
“The attention of Leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been drawn to diverse comments regarding the Closure of our previous Official Twitter Handle on the 5th of September, 2016 and the Launch of a New Official Handle @officialpdpnig immediately. The action was necessary.
“Equally, we have observed that some elements are creating false social media accounts especially on Twitter and Facebook for some leaders of the Party (past and present) with their photographs and purportedly publishing information on them to mislead the public. Recall that Senator Makarfi had through his SA (Media) earlier informed the public of this development and refuted ownership of any account. For the umpteenth time, we wish to reiterate that the National Chairman, H.E. Senator Ahmed Makarfi, CON, has no Twitter Handle or on any social media platform at all. Be warned!
“This clarification has become necessary in view of the desire of leadership of our great Party, the PDP, to integrate all our numerous members, teeming supporters and the general public on the new operations of the Party in view of its people-oriented rebranding and rebuilding Agenda.”
“For emphasis and in line with the PDP Constitution, the leadership of the PDP Publicity Division has as its Principal, the National Publicity Secretary who is the Chief Spokesman and Image-Maker of the Party, and Administrative Head (HoD) as enshrined in the PDP Establishment Manual, a Document approved by the Party’s Constitution. The Division has Four Units which include, the Social (New) Media; and the Party therefore has no directorate called “New Media”and no director of such position.”
“Again, our decision to close the Old Handle and Launched the New Handle is to address the issue of unauthorized statements to the Press on behalf of the Party. For effective control, our Official Accounts remains:
“o Twitter Handle- @officialpdpnig;
o Facebook Account – “Official Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Nigeria;
o Email – news@pdppublicity.com
“Notwithstanding the above, we are hereby further encouraging Party members to always stand up for the PDP in their personal or groups’ capacities through any medium of their choice.
“We also wish to use this medium and Launch the following indigenous Twitter Handles with immediate effect. They are:
“Igbo – @pdpnhqigbonigv
Yoruba – @pdpnhqyorubanigv
Hausa – @pdpnhqhausanigv
Pidgin – @pdpnhqpidginnigv”
“We urge our members, supporters and the general public to continue following this platforms to maximize interactions on the way forward for the Party as it is incumbent on the PDP as the main opposition in the Country to rescue Nigerians from the scourge of recession, oppression, hunger, intimidation, autocracy, starvation, insecurity, economic induced suicides and mal-administration by the APC led Federal and states government.”
“Finally, we call on our members nationwide to unite and stay focus as one indivisible body in these unprecedented trying times in our Party and Nation’s history. Nigeria is ours, let’s work together to salvage her.”
