Stanley Park Zoo
A polar bear lunges for the water in the Stanley Park Zoo in 1965 while another looks on. The zoo was started in the 1890s out of the animal collection of the first park superintendent, Henry Avison, but Vancouverites voted to phase it out in a 1994 referendum and it closed for good when the last animal, an elderly polar bear named Tuk, died in December 1997 at age 36.
