CUMBERLAND – The Cumberland Recreation Department is bringing back its eight-week Explore Archery and JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Department Recognition) programs for ages 8 and older beginning Saturday, April 30, and taking place each Saturday at Diamond Hill Park.

The Explore Archery program, which is developed by USA Archery and the Archery Trade Association, is an innovative education program focused on introducing archers of all ages and abilities to the lifelong sport of target archery.

Students achieve awards through active participation in individual and team building activities. The focus is on fundamental skills, a competitive edge, and a bit of creativity, not on athletic ability or perfect scores. There are five achievement awards that can be earned in Explore Archery, and each award represents a new skill learned.

Explore Archery complements the JOAD program, which will help the JOAD archers strengthen basic archery skills and take students from simple games to shooting in more complex head-to-head competitions.

The Explore Archery program will hold its classes from 10 to 11 a.m., with the JOAD Recognition program taking place from 11 a.m. to noon.

The fee is $60 for those who bring their own bows and $65 for those who need a rental.

Coaches are Tom Mahoney and Ryan Mahoney.

To register, visit the Recreation Department office during normal business hours at 4097 Diamond Hill Road or call 401-334-9996. Preregistration is necessary; space is limited.
