PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island College alumni and friends return to campus on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17 and 18, for the homecoming celebration “Designing our Future.” Most events are free and open to the greater community.
On Saturday, Oct. 18, the annual homecoming parade kicks off at 12:30 p.m. on the campus quad with area cultural dance troupes, classic cars and musicians.
New Director of Alumni Affairs Suzy Alba anticipates a sizable crowd for the rain-or-shine weekend, filled with a number of family-friendly and interactive events. She explained that RIC is always looking for ways to reconnect with and support its more than 55,000 alumni – 70 percent of whom continue to live in Rhode Island. She hopes that visitors will notice many of the recent changes to the campus.
“This year’s homecoming theme, “Designing our Future,” sends a message to alumni that RIC continues to evolve and improve to meet the needs of the next generation,” said Alba.
As an example, she pointed to the newly renovated arts center, Alex and Ani Hall, which is open to the public for tours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18. During the tours, RIC also is opening its ceramics studio to the public; visitors are invited to throw a pot on one of the available potter’s wheels. At 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, RIC jewelry-making students show off their designs at a special jewelry fashion show.
There will be a Saturday cookout featuring traditional and vegetarian options and concluding with homemade apple crisp. The cookout runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is being provided courtesy of Liberty Mutual Insurance.
Among the athletic events on Saturday is the RIC Homecoming 5K Run/Walk at 8 a.m. Registration is $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the event. At 1 p.m., the RIC Anchormen soccer team plays Eastern Connecticut State University. The soccer match features a golf ball drop and raffle at halftime, with raffle chances costing $10 per ball.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Saturday, area authors are available to sign books at a book fair, while local artists sell their wares under the crafts tent. Special activities for children include pumpkin painting, games and music.
Several affinity groups at the college planning networking events for the homecoming include the RIC Greek alumni reunion, the 30th reunion of the Class of ’84 and the Health and Physical Education program reunion.
