Anyone who has traveled a few miles along the famous HWY 1 knows how gorgeous the views are, from the famous southern California sun and surf beaches near Los Angeles and Malibu to the colder, rocky tree lined beaches of Big Sur and Santa Cruz. Pacific Coast HWY 1 access is easily available to you and your family, now matter where you are coming from, this highway runs along the pacific coastline fairly close to many airports including the Long Beach, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Monterey and San Jose airports. From these coastal ports, California beach vacation rentals are only a short rental car or shuttle ride away.
Best Beaches of California for Summer Vacations
Venice Beach
No beach in the world is like Venice Beach. Sure, other California beaches have sand, surf and sunshine. But they do not have a 3-ring urban street circus, complete with philosophizing artists, trash-talking hoopsters, preening weightlifters, barefoot sand sculptors and more. All of this frenetic activity happens on Ocean Front Walk, a 3/4-mile concrete boardwalk with stores, fast-food spots, flea markets and artists.
Santa Barbara Beach Camping
In our office, we can’t agree whether the town of Santa Barbara is a good spot for California beach vacations or not, but it’s a little too upscale to qualify in my opinion. However, the nearby coastline is a great place for camping vacations, with four nice campgrounds.
Laguna Beach
Laguna is one of Orange County’s most fashionable towns, as well as one of the most culturally rich, but the beach is a big draw, too. The water at Laguna is generally clean and calm, though occasionally the Pacific tends to be cool with strong tides. Clean, white and warm, Laguna’s sands are perfect for strolling, volleyball matches or simply unwinding on a blanket.
Santa Cruz
This city provides access to numerous beaches, over fifteen, as well as a variety of state parks and reserves, and shopping and fine dinning. For family fun you can charter a sail boat or kayak, take surf lessons or visit the famous Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, which is an admission free amusement park located along a mile of sandy beach.
Irish Beach
A small vacation rental community south of Mendocino with private entry to the sand, it has great views and is an especially good place to get away with friends and family.
Pismo Beach
Pismo Beach is also very family-oriented and has over 23 miles of beachfront enjoyment. There are lots of opportunities for fishing, shopping, surfing and riding dune buggies. With California beach rentals in Pismo Beach, you can also find that beautiful, inviting white sand to enjoy as you watch the sunset over the horizon.
Cayucos
Just big enough to have some nice restaurants and interesting shops, yet small enough to be cute. With a couple of hotels next to the sand, plenty more just a few steps away and a nice little pier and beach, it’s got all the ingredients that make great California beach vacations and getaways.
Huntington Pier
Located in Orange County, this beach has a great surfing scene with bike paths, skating trails and body-boarding. There is something for all entertainment preferences and is very conducive to families and surfers. In addition to the beach culture there, you can also take surfing lessons at nearby Bolsa Chica, where there are numerous surfing schools and many opportunities.
Dillon Beach
Near the mouth of Tomales Bay, this little village on the hillside is packed with rental houses and not far from the Tomales oyster farms and Point Reyes. It’s just isolated enough to have the makings of truly memorable California beach vacations.
Sonoma Coast
The beaches of the Sonoma Coast look like something out of a magazine! The white sand and clean water looks incredibly inviting and the area doesn’t lack for tourists or beach lovers. There are numerous attractions to the beach, but the best known attraction is the waves that surfers love to challenge. The waves are a big hit, but surfers and swimmers should be aware of “sleeper waves” that can rise and fall unexpectedly, causing danger. The beach attracts more than 300 bird species each year, some of which are indigenous to the area.
Newport Beach
Trendsetters, jet-setters, and beach lovers in the know have been taking advantage of Newport Beach’s coastal charms for decades. There’s the ritzy harbor most folks will only dream of docking a yacht in; beachside “bungalows” worth many, many millions; a shopping district so chic, Rodeo Drive looks discounted; and, oh yes, an utterly magnificent stretch of beach. This wide bed of sand, silky and blonde, rolls south from Newport Pier to Balboa Pier, and plays host to diehard surfers, serious sunbathers, trendy 20-somethings and families. Sitting by a weathered pier, gazing past wooden lifeguard stands toward a fiery sunset, one can’t help but wax nostalgic for days when Beach Boys records and long boards were all the rage.
