In just over six years, Instagram has grown to 500 million users, with 300 million active users every single day. This makes the image-based social network more popular than rival Twitter, and an important marketing tool for business and website owners. A new infographic from the folks at Website Builder explores the growing popularity of the platform among the everyday users and big brands. Here are some of the facts they uncovered:

Daily Usage

Each day an average of 4.2 billion posts are liked by users, while 95 million new photos and videos are shared. And while 55% of 18 to 29 year olds in the US are active on the network, 80% of Instagram accounts are registered outside of the United States. Russia has the second most active Instagram population.

Celebrities Rule

As with most social networks it’s celebrities who have the biggest followings and on Instagram the current pack leader is singer and actress Selena Gomez, with over 105.3 million. She’s followed by Taylor Swift (95.1 million), Ariana Grande (92.1 million), and Beyoncé (90.4 million). Down at 9th place is Selena’s former boyfriend, Justin Bieber, with 77.8 million followers. Poor Biebs.

Nike (68.2 million) is the most popular corporate brand, followed by National Geographic (65.7 million) and Victoria’s Secret (49 million). Barack Obama tops the rankings of political leaders with 11.5 million followers, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has 5.5 million and the Queen Consort of Jordan (Rania Al Abdullah) has 2.7 million.

Advertising Is Taking Off

Sponsored post advertising did not launch on Instagram until 2013, three years after the site was founded and over a year after Facebook’s acquisition of the company. Today, the social network makes an estimated $1.53 billion annually in global mobile ad revenue, which is 8.4% of what Facebook generates. In total there are over 500,000 paying advertisers, and millions of brands, celebrities, business and website owners posting content in an effort to promote themselves.

According to the data, as many as half of all users follow at least one business account, which ranges from mega corporations like Nike, to local restaurants and stores.

Around 5% of users are believed to take direct action after being inspired by Instagram posts, which can include going and buying a product online, visiting a website, doing an internet search related to the post, or informing a friend.
