Min Qualifications

Masters degree in a natural or applied science or engineering or related field or equivalent and three years related experience.

Job Summary:

Provide and maintain appropriate protocols and oversight in anticipation, recognition, evaluation, control and prevention of work place hazards. The hazards or stressors include biological, chemical, physical, ergonomic and psychosocial. Environmental and occupational hygienists will apply exposure risk management expertise for the protection of workers.

Salary Range

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Specific Job Related Duties

* Protects the liability of the institution through managing, monitoring, and actively abating chemical and Industrial Hygiene safety and regulatory issues.
* Provides application, maintenance and monitoring of Industrial Hygiene, hearing conservation, food safety and respiratory standards necessary to operate the Institution.
* Manages and ensures program delivery of relevant codes and standards associated with regulatory agencies such as American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), National Institutes for Occupational Health (NIOSH), Texas Department of Health and Safety Services (TDHSS), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (TJC), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Transportation (DOT).
* Directs applicability and manages application of a worker safety assessment program and supports the UTMB emergency response team with applicable best practices
* Demonstrate abilities to manage and perform preform complex field investigations, make practical recommendations to protect persons and to supervise industrial hygiene staff.
* Directs the formulation of field investigations, outlines required analyses, evaluates data, develops sampling strategies, and researches regulatory standards and hazard data.
* Provides direction and solutions to safety field investigations as necessary; including odor complaints, indoor air quality, asbestos and blood borne pathogen exposure issues.
* Responsible for managing program recommendations for corrective actions where environmental, health and safety hazards exist. Follows standard practices and procedures in collecting data, calculations, and analysis for solutions.
* Responsible for overseeing and managing the respiratory protection program, including the fit testing scheduling, implementation, reporting and records.
* Manages assigned program budget.

Preferred Education

**_PREFERRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:_**

* More than 3 years’ experience managing and controlling hazards in a large academic setting, including research laboratories employing hazardous chemicals
* More than 3 years’ experience in a healthcare setting managing, evaluating and controlling hazards, including management of select aspects of the Environment Of Care (EOC).
* Certified in one or more of the following:
* Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager (CHFM)
* Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
* Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
* Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)

Preferred Skill/Competency

**_KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:_**

* Manages and oversees assessments and report preparations dealing with asbestos, lead, microbial and industrial hygiene surveys in varied work environments.
* Ability to manage and EHS trainers and educate employees on the regulatory standards applicable to the facility. Instruct all employees on internal EHS policy and procedures. Ensure required safety and environmental training has been identified and completed for new and existing employees.
* Ability to interpret standards and regulations and implement practical solutions to assure personnel safety and compliance with state and federal regulations, and apply to supervised staff.
* Working understanding of confined space entry, lock-out tag-out, forklift and other typical physical safety programs and manage those programs accordingly
