Release of new information from MTA, Port Authority of NY/NJ, DOT, DMV and Thruway Authority Continues New York’s Unprecedented Open Data Access and Transparency

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that new information, focused on transportation, has been added to Open.ny.gov providing the public with access to more than 100 transportation datasets, maps, and charts. The continued expansion of Open.ny.gov underscores the State’s commitment to transparency, harnessing technology to showcase the vast resources of the state and fostering productive engagement with government. Open.ny.gov is a powerful tool to empower citizens by providing centralized high-value government data to search, explore, download, and share.

“Since the launch of Open.ny.gov, we have made millions of state, local and federal government records available to the public and we will continue to expand this website to open up our government to New Yorkers,” Governor Cuomo said. “This information provides a detailed resource that New Yorkers, researchers and businesses can use to study the state’s transportation networks and agencies. This data has great potential to foster greater innovation and efficiency in the transit industry, and I encourage New Yorkers to get involved with their government by exploring Open.ny.gov.”

This new information includes data from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, NYS Department of Motor Vehicles (NYS DMV), NYS Department of Transportation (NYS DOT), NYS Thruway Authority (NYSTA), Capital District Transit Authority (CDTA), and the NYS Bridge Authority (NYSBA), featuring:
· MTA Daily Traffic Statistics with charts for MTA operated bridges and tunnels: Daily traffic statistics showing the number of vehicles (including cars, buses, trucks, and motorcycles) that pass through each of the bridges and tunnels.
· MTA Arts for Transit: The dataset contains information about the various art work located at train and subway stations throughout the metropolitan area under the Permanent Art Program. The data provides the branch or station and the artist and artwork information.
· MTA Subway Entrance/Exit Data with Maps: Information about MTA subway station entrances and exits including division, line, station name, location, availability of vending for fare purchases, and staffing level.
· NYS Thruway Canal System Boat Launches Map: Maps of the existing segments of the NYS Canalway Trail, and locations of Canal System boat launches. Information available about each boat launch includes location, day use amenities, and availability of parking, camping, restrooms, and potable water.

· 511 NY Events: Beginning 2010. The 511NY dataset contains historical traffic and transit event information provided by the NYS DOT, the New York City Department of Transportation, NYSTA, and the Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition (Buffalo-Niagara Region). The file includes all incidents/accidents, construction projects, and special events in New York State that were available on the 511NY traffic and transit map for the time period
· Planned, Active and Completed Thruway Capital Projects with Maps: Listing of all NYSTA planned, active, and completed capital projects, beginning in 2005. Data includes status, location, year project started, estimated completion date, and approved funding.
· NYS DMV Facility File: Information on facilities licensed by DMV which include car dealers, repairs, shops, inspection stations, and more.
Also included in the release is data about trees planted in New York City by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey; statistics on passengers boarding aircrafts at New York State airports; data about the number and types of vehicles entering and exiting at Thruway toll points; and much more.

This new data follows the announcement that New York State became the first State to publish its provisional open data guidelines and seek public comment on GitHub, an open source platform that allows for open collaboration and sharing. In response to growing demand for open data, New York State seeks to bring together its wealth of data, and empower citizens to share, utilize, innovate and generate value using this new strategic resource.
