Clinton, N.Y. – The 2011 documentary film “Bully” will be screened at Hamilton College on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 4:15 p.m., in the Red Pit, Kirner-Johnson Building. The film explores the pained and endangered lives of bullied children, revealing a widespread problem that crosses geographic, racial, ethnic and economic borders. The screening is free and open to the public.
Directed by Lee Hirsch, the documentary chronicles the lives of five young students who encounter bullying on a daily basis. The students, who were followed over the course of a school year, face a range of issues, including violence, cyber bullying, and other debilitating ridicule. Their geographic, socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic diversity proves the vastness of the issue across the country.
The film also focuses on two families who have lost their children to suicide, highlighting the severity of America’s bullying crisis. The traditional responses of teachers, parents, and school administrators to bullying are questioned as the film attempts redefine how to effectively handle aggressive behaviors and advocate for the students safety and well-being. Through the subject’s hardships, the documentary captures the severity of the issue, delivering an essential message to the audience while facilitating the emerging anti-bullying movement.
The film premiered at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival to widespread acclaim, winning many documentary film awards throughout the world. Its director, Lee Hirsch, is a Sundance and Emmy Award winning filmmaker.
