During the second round of the 2015 NCAA College Cup on Sunday, Indiana’s Ben Maurey notched his first goal with Indiana at the most opportune time, UC Santa Barbara’s Ismaila Jome tallied a golden goal and a trio of PDL players tallied goals for Georgetown.
Here is a breakdown of the key PDL-tied performances as the tournament moves into the third round next Sunday:
Maurey lifts Indiana past UConn: Senior forward Ben Maurey (Des Moines Menace), who spent his undergraduate years at Brown, had been in search of his first goal since joining Indiana. He picked the perfect time to finally strike as his tally was the difference during the Hoosiers’ 1-0 victory against Connecticut on Sunday in Bloomington, Ind. His 39th-minute score came just two minutes after he was subbed into the match.
“Just to be able to say that I scored with this jersey on in front of the crowd on this field, it means a lot to me,” Maurey said. “I would have liked to score earlier, but it’s a great game to get it in.”
Indiana advanced to the third round to face top-seeded Wake Forest in the third round next Sunday.
Ferrell, top-seeded Wake blank Charlotte: A pair of Carolina Dynamo goalkeepers duked it out, and it was Wake Forest’s Alec Ferrell who won out. Ferrell tied a career high with seven saves as the tournament’s top-seeded Demon Deacons defeated Charlotte 1-0 on Sunday at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem. It marked the Deacons’ 12th shutout of the season. Charlotte goalkeeper Austin Pack saved three of the four Wake Forest shots that went on frame. The Demon Deacons will next host Indiana in the third round.
Jensen and Froschauer lead Buckeyes past Dayton: Ohio State forward Danny Jensen (Charlotte Eagles) tallied a key second-half equalizer and goalkeeper Chris Froschauer (Dayton Dutch Lions) made two saves in a penalty kick shootout as the Buckeyes defeated Dayton 4-3 in a shootout. The two teams were tied 1-1 through regulation and overtime. Froschauer, a transfer from Dayton, had seven saves before the shootout to lead his side into the third round against eighth-seeded Stanford.
“It was definitely an exciting game, and we have a lot of respect for them,” Froschauer said of Dayton. “I played for them for three years, so I obviously know a lot of the guys really well. It’s tough to see them kind of down after the game, but at the same time it’s great to carry my team on from here.”
Jome’s OT goal lifts UC Santa Barbara: UC Santa Barbara forward Ismaila Jome (Ventura County Fusion/Portland Timbers U-23s) scored a 93rd-minute goal for a 1-0 victory against South Carolina at Harder Stadium. The Gauchos forward has battled injuries for much of the season, but he shined on the biggest stage Sunday with his third goal of the season to lift his team into the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2011. The 15th-seeded UC Santa Barbara side will now face second-seeded Clemson this Sunday.
Hume’s goal, assist pace Tar Heels: North Carolina forward Tucker Hume (Midland/Odessa Sockers FC) wasted little time giving the Tar Heels the upper hand. Hume scored a second-minute goal and followed with an assist to Zach Wright in the second half as North Carolina defeated Coastal Carolina 2-1 on Sunday. Fifth-seeded UNC now will face 12th-seeded Creighton on Saturday in the third round.
PDL trio cashes in for Hoyas: Three different PDL players contributed a goal during Georgetown’s 3-0 win against Hofstra at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. Arun Basuljevic (New York Red Bulls U23) opened the scoring in the fifth minute, and then Brandon Allen (Baltimore Bohemians) and Alex Muyl (New York Red Bulls U23) put the match away with goals in the 87th and 90th minutes, respectively. Third-seeded Georgetown will now face Boston College in the third round on Sunday.
Haworth, Seattle shut down UCLA: Seattle goalkeeper Shane Haworth (Puget Sound Gunners FC) made six saves and earned the clean sheet as his 11th-seeded side defeated UCLA 1-0 at Championship Field in Seattle. It marked the first Sweet 16 appearance and first win against the Bruins in the Redhawks’ history. Now Seattle prepares for sixth-seeded Syracuse on Sunday.
Misc. notes: Creighton midfielder Ricardo Perez (Ocala Stampede) scored what proved to be the game-winner during the Bluejays’ 5-1 victory against Drake on Sunday. His 17th-minute score gave Creighton an early 2-0 lead and the team never looked back. … Stanford defender Brandon Vincent (Portland Timbers U-23s) scored an equalizer and his side went on to defeat Santa Clara 3-1 at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. Santa Clara’s Dylan Autran (Des Moines Menace) gave his side a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute. But Vincent and the Stanford offense were relentless against Santa Clara goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh (Burlingame Dragons FC), who came up with seven saves to try and keep Santa Clara in the match. … Akron’s Sean Sepe (Michigan Bucks) and Timbers U-23 alum Victor Souto each tallied a goal during Akron’s dominant 6-1 victory against Rutgers. Souto’s fifth-minute tally was part of an impressive five-goal run through the opening 18 minutes. Sepe then chipped in with a 60th-minute goal for Akron’s lone tally in the second half. The fourth-seeded Zips now face SMU in the third round on Sunday. … Ben Polk (K-W United FC) scored a 33rd-minute equalizer and sixth-seeded Syracuse defeated Dartmouth 2-1. … Virginia’s Jeff Caldwell (Sounders FC U23) came up with five saves, but it was not enough as the Cavaliers bowed out of the tournament with a 1-0 loss to Maryland.
