It has been 144 days since the Environmental Protection Agency has had a permanent administrator — the longest period of time in its history. And in that time, Republicans have continually obstructed Gina McCarthy’s nomination to head the EPA for over 126 days, also a record delay.1
Meanwhile, our inaction on climate change is making the problem worse and frankly, we’re running out of time. That’s why we’re teaming up with our friends at Environmental Action to pressure the Senate to confirm McCarthy to head the EPA so she can get to work to combat climate change. Click here to contact your Senators now and demand Gina McCarthy’s nomination is confirmed without further delay.
Originally, McCarthy was seen as a safe compromise choice, having worked with Republicans in the past including Mitt Romney when he was Governor of Massachusetts.
But despite her reputation as one who can broker compromises and her long and qualified career, Republicans are STILL holding up her nomination because of their ideological opposition to the EPA.2
Well the planet can’t wait, and neither can we. And we need a new EPA director in order to enact President Obama’s ambitious climate agenda. Contact your Senators now and tell them to confirm Gina McCarthy to head the EPA without delay.
When Obama delivered his climate change speech at Georgetown University, he laid out an ambitious plan to regulate existing power plant emissions, factor in climate impacts on future projects and work towards new international accords on greenhouse gas emissions. But without an EPA director, Obama will be unable to push his climate agenda forward, putting all of our futures at risk.
And it’s not like McCarthy is unqualified. With over 25 years of experience, McCarthy has advised five Massachusetts governors on the environment and successfully implemented a regional policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants.3
But that hasn’t stopped Republicans from stalling her nomination, demanding answers from over 1,100 off-topic questions as a poorly disguised attempt to hold up her nomination. Well we think 144 days without a director of the EPA is long enough and it’s about time for McCarthy to get an up-or-down vote. Contact your Senators now and demand a confirmation of Gina McCarthy to head the EPA.
Because the environment just can’t wait any longer.
